After they'd left the house, through the flight and even up till the point of settling in their hotel once they had arrived at their destination, Sophia's mind remained perturbed, thinking of the awkward conversation she'd had with someone whom she was supposed to be a mother figure to.
"River" she called in a bid to get her husband's attention.
"We're hurting her. We've been hurting since we adopted her." Sophia said, her words almost inaudible, guilt eating deep into her conscience.
"You don't think I see that Soph?" River asked, heaving a heavy sigh.
A moment of silence passed between the two before being broken by River.
"There's really nothing we can do at this point""We could just tell her the truth." Sophia choked out, desperately trying to hold back her tears despite the stinging sensation her eyes felt and heaviness weighing in her throat.
"You know that's not an option" River's frustration was heard in his voice.
"We're terrible parents to her. She's starting at a new school tomorrow River and I didn't have the slightest clue until few hours before she's supposed to resume. What's worse I don't even know why she's going to a new school. What kind of mother do you think that makes me!?" Sophia shouted as tears she no longer struggled to hold back started to roll down her cheeks.
"What kind of father do you think not getting her something as simple as a birthday gift make me?" River said and although his voice didn't go any higher, his voice was thick with emotion.
"Just tell her. I'm sure she'll understand"
"And what if something goes wrong?" River asked his wife. "What if some freak accident happens?"
His questions were met with silence and after a while he moved to comfort his wife, wrapping her in a hug and placing a kiss on her forehead.
"This affects me too. We just have to be patient. Everything will sort itself out. Besides, we're almost done dear. Once we are, we'll have more time for her like we originally planned" River said and even though there was no verbal response, her crying was slowly subsiding into small sniffles.
River's eyes were shut tightly but he heaved a small sigh of relief when he noticed his wife beginning to calm.
'We're so sorry Lora. It'll be over soon and we'll make it up I promise." He thought.

~🌹Elora🌹~
Even up until after dinner and for the rest of the the day, the phone call remained somewhere at the back of my mind but waking up the next morning, thoughts of it were gone and replaced with thoughts of how my second day of detention would be like.
The first day was okay and wasn't too crowded since there were only about two students with the exemption of myself present.
Azariah wasn't one of those two which surprised me because I was almost a hundred percent sure we both had punishments to serve but I wasn't about to worry my head over something as meaningless as someone not serving their punishment when the appropriate school authorities were there for that.
Thankfully I had just today and tomorrow left to get it over with. 'Sucks to be Azariah.' I thought as I took my bath, getting ready for school.
The tuesday morning flew by quickly and quite frankly I hadn't figured out the flow of the school, not that I was really trying to anyways. I simply did my own thing and did my best to stay on my own and out of people's lane.
