Chapter 3

Fang shi exploded upon hearing these words, "Who? Who pushed you? Which shameless little brat dared to push you??"

"Mom, Mother!" Song Dingxiang quickly held back Fang shi, who was about to rush out, saying, "Please don't get upset, this matter wasn't caught in action, who can we confront? But I feel like there are too many coincidences in these matters... Mom, if you don't believe me, just wait and see, I think we should have known who it was before the New Year."

Although Fang shi had a fiery temper and loved to chatter, she was not foolish. After thinking for a moment, she said, "Is it related to the Xu family's scholar?"

Song Dingxiang smiled and said, "Actually, this is a good thing in a way, at least we can see what kind of people the Xu family really are. Otherwise, if I had really married into that family, wouldn't it be a life of suffering?"

Fang shi couldn't help but snort and said, "In the beginning, your grandfather thought that the Xu family's son was honest and well-educated, which is why he arranged this betrothal for you two, and he has also helped their family for the past few years. Who would have thought... they've actually raised a wolf in sheep's clothing."

Pausing for a moment, she sighed and continued, "Your grandfather hasn't been feeling well these days. Once you're better, you should go visit him and your grandmother affectionately. I didn't dare let the two elders come over during your illness."

"I understand, Mom. Anyway, you just keep an eye on this matter. This is like escaping from the tiger's mouth, it's a good thing." Song Dingxiang felt a bit dry in the throat, took another sip of water, and spoke softly, "If the Zhou family's son is capable, marrying him wouldn't be bad either, there won't be any troublesome in-laws. And when he goes to the military camp, I'll just stay at home, right?"

Fang shi burst out laughing and poked Song Dingxiang's forehead, "Dream on! You're already married off and you still want to stay at home? But what you said makes sense, let's see if that Zhou boy can make something of himself. Anyway, you're only fourteen this year, even if you don't marry him, we're not in a rush. I'll find you a better match in a couple of years."

She just couldn't believe it, her daughter was raised so well, how could she not marry into a good family?

A few days later, Song Dingxiang's illness finally cleared up. She cleaned herself up and went out for the first time, carefully examining the courtyard.

Northern courtyards are usually spacious, with a front yard for raising chickens and growing vegetables, and a back yard for raising pigs and growing vegetables.

The space is never wasted. Because even though the extended family members have separated households, they still live in the same courtyard, so there are many houses within the compound.

Facing the courtyard, three main rooms stand in a row. The central room is the hall, where a weathered but meticulously clean Table of the Eight Immortals takes center stage.

A straw curtain hangs behind the table, obscuring the view beyond. Flanking the hall on either side sit two large cooking stoves, used for both wintertime warmth (heating the kang bed) and cooking.

The western room has a thin partition wall running down the center, effectively creating two separate sleeping areas to accommodate more people.

Currently, the eastern room serves as the living quarters for the grandparents, while the western room used to be occupied by the youngest uncle. However, due to his recent school commitments, he rarely returns home.

The house has three main rooms. In addition, both the west and east wings mirror the main rooms, each containing three rooms. Song Dingxiang resides in a room within the west wing, while Fang shi and Song Zhiyuan share the large northern room.
