Chapter 2
Song Dingxiang took a few sips of honey water to soothe her dry throat before speaking softly, "Mom, it's not the fault of that young man from the Zhou family. He helped us out of goodwill, and receiving complaints for it doesn't seem right."
"I'm not saying it's his fault, but their family..." Fang shi was about to start rambling.
Song Dingxiang quickly interjected, "Mom, why don't I meet with him and ask him directly what he wants? How does that sound?"
"What's the point of meeting him?" Fang shi was slightly displeased, but seeing her daughter's distressed face, she sighed and said, "You're too soft-hearted. Fine, go ahead and meet him. Husband, call that young man from the Zhou family inside."
Song Zhiyuan grunted in acknowledgment and left the room.
Before long, Zhou Tiezhu walked in, still stubbornly holding onto the two wild rabbits.
Song Dingxiang lifted her eyes and carefully observed the seventeen-year-old young man in front of her.
Zhou Tiezhu was tall, with attractive features, but unusually thin. Probably due to his growth spurt and inadequate food intake, his complexion appeared slightly yellow.
However, his eyes were clear, giving off a sense of purity that was uncommon among the Zhou family members, with no apparent cunning in his demeanor.
"Sit," Song Dingxiang pointed to the long bench on the ground, "Why are you standing there?"
Zhou Tiezhu pursed his lips, feeling a bit nervous, but still sat confidently on the bench.
He's someone who can hold his own. Song Dingxiang thought to herself, glancing at Fang shi and then at Song Zhiyuan. Their attitudes were quite apparent – they thought Zhou Tiezhu was a good kid, but unfortunate to be associated with the Zhou family.
Actually...
Song Dingxiang suddenly smiled and said, "Young Master Zhou, now that I'm fine, I realize how fortunate I was to have you by my side back then. I just don't quite understand why you keep coming back here."
Fang shi was about to speak but Song Dingxiang squeezed her arm, prompting her to stay silent.
Zhou Tiezhu once again pursed his lips, revealing his inner nervousness. After a moment, he composed himself and said, "It's because of me that the Xu family broke off your engagement and spoke ill of you. If you..."
"Do you want to marry me?" Song Dingxiang cut to the chase.
Fang shi and Song Zhiyuan were startled, as well as Zhou Tiezhu. The three of them looked at Song Dingxiang all at once.
"What nonsense are you spouting, child?" Fang shi exclaimed impatiently.
Song Dingxiang cleared her throat, took a few sips of honey water from the bowl beside her, and then smiled, "Dad, mom, why are you so worried? The Xu family is not honorable, and now they've caused Young Master Zhou to be in a difficult situation. A woman's reputation is as important as her life, and with their rumors, I may have trouble finding a good marriage in the coming years."
"But you can't marry into the Zhou family!" Fang shi was hot-headed, unable to bear the thought of being associated with the Zhou family.
Softly and gently, Song Dingxiang said, "Of course, I will not marry into the Zhou family. Even if Young Master Zhou could see, I would never marry into a family like yours. Don't you know your own family situation? Next year, when you join the army and leave, I'll be left to tend to your whole family?"
