Chapter 6

The wedding of Song Taohong from the Song family attracted many people from the village who were curious to see what was happening. However, the other main character of this gossip didn't show up, making the scene somewhat dull.

After enjoying the feast, Song Dingxiang's friends quickly headed over to Old Fourth Song Si's house.

"Is Dingxiang at home?" The rural children weren't as pampered or restrained as city children. The three girls stood at the front door and called out for Song Dingxiang without thinking anything was wrong with it.

Song Dingxiang came out from the upper room, greeted her friends, and ushered them inside. The upper room was still warm during the day with the kang (heated brick) bed, making both rooms cozy.

"Grandma, San Ya, Qiao Xing'er and Dan Hong are here." Song Dingxiang informed Li shi, the Old Madame Song.

Li shi nudged the sunflower seeds and melon seeds on the table and said, "Go play with them, take these snacks with you... and make some sweet syrup."

Having been in this world for two months now, Song Dingxiang had a good understanding of the characters around her and had started to relax a bit, enjoying her life as a young girl.

Most of her gossip still came from her female friends, as adults sometimes didn't share everything with children. However, there were no such reservations between the girls, forming an unbreakable gossip network.

"Wow, Dingxiang, you're looking really good these days." Among the girls, Qiao Xing was the oldest at sixteen today. She was already engaged, but due to the grandfather of the groom passing away recently, the wedding had been postponed to the next year.

Despite being only sixteen, she had the poise of a grown woman, particularly charming with her words.

The girls entered the room, greeted Li shi in the east room, praised Jin Qiao'er's craftiness, and then followed Song Dingxiang to the room opposite.

This room, although shaded, was not cold or damp. There was a small window on the wall covered with thick hemp paper.

Opening the window slightly allowed a view of the backyard where some of the Song children were playing instead of gathering firewood.

"Your kang (heated brick) bed is really cozy." San Ya kicked off her shoes, climbed onto the bed in a few strides, and sat down, not wanting to get up. "We heat the bed in my grandpa's room at our house, but it's always crowded with people, and there's no space for me."

San Ya lived at the entrance of the village and her family had many children. Whenever the adults went out to work, the grandfather at home would help look after the kids, and there were always a dozen or so running around crying and laughing.

"Then why don't you stay a bit longer at my place," Song Dingxiang set down the kang table, placed the sunflower seeds on, and then served each of them a bowl of hot syrup, "Aren't you all supposed to go to my third granduncle's house for a feast today? And now you're leaving already?"

Dan Hong chuckled and grabbed a handful of seeds, saying, "Oh no, we're not leaving yet. We just came here after the feast as we didn't have anything else to do. Qiao Xing Jie, why don't you come up on the bed and sit instead of sitting on the edge?"

Qiao Xing patted her skirt and said with a smile, "I'll stay down here. My mother told me to behave properly and act like a grown lady."

Song Dingxiang teasingly remarked, "Since when do grown ladies not sit on the bed? Who's a grown lady that doesn't sit on the bed?" She even winked at Qiao Xing.
