Chapter 7
Despite Song Taohong's situation, Song Dingxiang's wedding remained a lively affair. Though Zhou Tiezhu lacked a large family, a group of young villagers enthusiastically supported him, ensuring the preparations went smoothly.
The key factor contributing to the festivity was Zhou Tiezhu's generous betrothal gifts. These included twenty taels of silver, a pair of geese, and even five acres of land, valued at nearly ten taels. Combined with Song Dingxiang's dowry, the total value exceeded twenty taels.
The procession circled the village twice before happily carrying everything into the temporary pig-rearing courtyard where Zhou Tiezhu was staying.
The courtyard was spacious and bright, with half of the front yard used to hang decorated carrying poles and the other half having tables filled with melon seeds and peanuts. A group of children gleefully sat at the tables, stuffing their pockets full before running to see the new bride.
With only two rooms in the house, Song Dingxiang, wearing a red veil, sat on the kang bed in the east room, surrounded by a group of elderly women and her sisters.
The outer hall was used by Zhou Tiezhu to entertain guests, and after drinking tea and eating wedding candies, guests could easily enter Song Xingyi's house. The backyard was also decorated with red flowers everywhere.
Due to the cold weather, the feast couldn't be held outside, so all the rooms were utilized, filled inside and out with people.
The chef set up a stove in the courtyard, and since Song Zhiyuan originally raised pigs, his family had plenty of meat. This time, they went all out and let the chef handle everything.
However, it wasn't favoritism towards Song Dingxiang, but rather a gesture for his second daughter. During the banquet for his eldest daughter's wedding, they had also used half a pig.
This time, due to no one in Zhou Tiezhu's family, Song Zhiyuan consulted with someone and decided to merge two days into one, holding a lively celebration.
Song's eldest daughter, Song Yulan came with her husband's family to help out. Her husband was from a neighboring village, surnamed Xu. Although they had been relatives with the Xu family for five generations, they didn't interact much on regular days.
Hearing about the improprieties of the Xu family and seeing the festive atmosphere in the Song family's courtyard, he felt that he had made the right choice with his wife.
As for why that Xu scholar, after breaking off his engagement with Dingxiang to marry Old Third Song San's granddaughter, Taohong, nobody knew what he was thinking. Was he attracted to her good looks?
In the countryside, people only cared about whether a woman could work and bear children; looks were secondary. Even if someone was attractive, they wouldn't look so good after working in the fields for a couple of days.
A few people from the Zhou family came to the wedding, but none from Zhou Lao San's family. They had already fallen out and were being gossiped about.
If it wasn't for the impact on his eldest son's education, he probably wouldn't have wanted to part with the twenty taels and five acres of land.
They naturally can't stand to see Zhou Tiezhu live a good life. Zhou Lao San's wife leaned against the door and looked over to where the excitement was. With a disdainful snort, she said, "What's the big deal, is a short-lived guy worth all this trouble?"
"Enough, let's go inside," Zhou Lao San hurriedly went to close the door.
He felt uneasy, as he thought he had done something terribly wrong. But in the end, his own children were important, and he didn't want to cause trouble.
