"I seriously thought you were kidding when you said your whole room is just... paint," Newt announces.
"Well, I was not." I motion at the stripes on the walls again. The white has literally been changed into all kind of colors the last years.
"And how did that happen? Isn't it like... toxic?"
I was already starting a new painting while Newt made comments about the walls, so with a shrug, I add another blue stripe to the wall. "Just like that. To test the color."
"But you can already see it on the palette."
I shake my head. "You don't get it."
"Clearly not. It's nice, though. Doesn't look bad. But where is your furniture? You have a bed and that's it."
"There's drawers below it."
"Your whole closet fits in there?"
"Don't act like my closet is smaller than yours." I blow a laugh out as I breathe.
I hear him move on the bed, the sound of it screeching in my ears. "Okay, true. And what's it that you're painting?"
I squint my eyes together. I can figure that out when there is a silence. "I don't know yet. Let me think."
"Okay."
Through that time, he's moving way too much on the bed. Then, not even two minutes later, "Have you got it?"
"Not yet."
"Okay." Twenty seconds of silence. "How long do you need?" is the following question.
"Just... shh," I tell him, praying it didn't sound too rude. He may talk all he wants as I paint— he can talk anytime— but right now isn't the greatest moment.
"How do you usually—"
"Shh."
"...get ideas?"
"Thinking," I say, then hint, "In silence."
My bed even makes his nod audible.
"Try not to move," I add once he's moving around again. I feel so stupid telling him all of this. I feel stupid that I even need all this perfect silence to think of a painting while my mind is normally spinning. But something will have to clear my mind after... whatever was going on before.
