Me: Hey guys! I wrote almost half of this book almost four years ago. Reposting and continuing this almost feels like restarting, and I would love if you gave it a chance! I've worked on it for more than three years, and that means that the writing style changes A LOT. I promise (hopefully) it gets better! Hope you enjoy! (5/31/2024)

BLURRY, FRACTURED MEMORIES SWAM through Sophie's mind, but she couldn't piece them together. She tried opening her eyes and found only darkness. Something rough pressed against her wrists and ankles, refusing to let her move.

Dex: *looks at the others uneasily* What's going on?

Sophie: I... I think I know.

A wave of cold rushed through her as the horrifying realization dawned.

She was a hostage.

A cloth across her lips stifled her cry for help, and a sedative's sweet aroma stung her nose when she inhaled, making her head spin.

Were they going to kill her?

Would the Black Swan really destroy their own creation? What was the point of Project Moonlark, then? What was the point of the Everblaze?

Keefe: *frowning* This is how you start a book about us?! Seriously!?

Biana: Care you explain why we have a book about us in the first place?

Keefe: I mean, hey, it's cool, right?

Tam: What it is- is creepy.

Marella: You're creepy.

Tam: I'm not the one who has a book written about them!

Marella: How do you know I'm in the book?!

Tam: YOU WOULD KNOW IF YOU KEPT READING!

The drug lulled her toward a dreamless oblivion, but she fought back—clinging to the one memory that could shine a tiny spot of light in the thick, inky haze. A pair of beautiful aquamarine eyes.

Fitz's eyes. Her first friend in her new life. Her first friend ever.

Grady: *frowns unapprovingly* Interesting.

Fitz: I do indeed have beautiful aquamarine eyes.

Keefe: Shut up.

Fitz: Rude :[

Keefe: *smiles and tries not to strangle Fitz*

Maybe if she hadn't noticed him that day in the museum, none of this would have happened.

No. She knew it'd been too late even then. The white fires were already burning—curving toward her city and filling the sky with sticky, sweet smoke.

The spark before the blaze.

Ro: That's it? That's the entire first chapter?

Sophie: Preface, yeah. They're normally that short.

Fitz: Huh.

Edaline: Well, anyway, that was interesting...

Sophie: I hope Chapter 1 will be better... this is so odd.

Me: It will be, trust me!!

Tam: WHO ARE YOU!?!?!?!

Me: The one showing you this stuff!!

Everyone: *blinking in confusion*

Biana: Sophie, what the hell is going on.

Sophie: Why would I know?

Linh: Because you are very pointedly looking EVERYWHERE but the book.

Tam: I think I'd be embarrassed too if I thought about Fitz's eyes for an entire paragraph.

Sophie: *ineligible noises*
