L: Full Moon

A week had gone by with no word from Aleksandr and it was the full moon night. The wolf was dominant on the nights leading to the full moon. Omega wolves, like Leo, were generally submissive in nature as compared to the Alphas and Betas, and as a result regarded as weak. Sometimes, also discarded from a wolf pack for the same reason. Leo considered all that as wolfshit though.

Leo and his friends had come to the outskirts of the city, like every full moon night, where the forest started and the trees lined up densely. It allowed them a chance to shift into their wolves freely, away from prying human eyes. Wolfing around in the wilderness with his friends, Leo felt his wolf take over as his human eyes changed to his wolf's sharper ones, his canines growing longer and replacing his teeth, his nails changing to claws and digging in the dirt. The scent of the forest invaded Leo's olfactory senses as the smell of tree trunks, wildflowers, and moss-covered paths assaulted him. Leo could feel the nature calling his wolf and all he wanted was to run and chase and be chased.

Up until last year, Leo's best friend Lina had also joined them but since she was in Paris this year, there wasn't anyone with whom Leo could completely let down his guard. Leo had arrived with Jake, whom Lina had dated last year, in a no-strings-attached relationship and since then Jake and his friends had become Leo's friends as well. Well, they had become people who were good acquaintances, at the very least. Familiar people to spend time with, Leo would say.

Leo let his mind drift as he ran around the perimeter. There were times when as a kid, he used to get teased and bullied a lot for being an Omega. He was still living in the countryside then with his family in his grandmother or babushka Tatiana's house, so his sister, Nadya, had always come to his rescue when the bullies outnumbered him. Dealing with them had taught Leo two important life lessons - to tough it out in bad situations and to throw a punch. Nadya had also taught him to aim his punch for the attacker's stomach and deliver a swift blow. He missed those days.

It was times like these when their wolves needed to howl at the moon and run under the night sky, that Leo missed his mother, Lenora, and his sister. Wolves stayed in packs and generally ran or played together under the moon with the people close to them, their friends, family, or other loved ones. Yet it had been years since Leo had spent the full moon with Nadya and their mother. They had done so in the countryside and for a few years even after they had moved to the city after Leo's babushka's death.

But then Leo's mother had dived into opening her own apparel company for young women and everything else had taken a back seat to her ambition. Nadya had joined their mother in running the company as soon as she had gotten her finance degree and was now the company's Chief Financial Officer. He was proud of both of them even as he missed them.

A silly thought had popped up in Leo's head that he might be able to spend this moon night with his mate, but Aleksandr's silence had made Leo banish it instantly. So much for having that conversation with him about opening up and being honest with each other, Leo thought bitterly. Thinking of his mate made him angry, hurt, annoyed, and lonely. All sorts of confusing emotions Leo had never felt before swirled in his head even as he yearned for the comfort of his mate's arms. He should have been with him this fortnight. Aleksandr, no Sasha, should have been with Leo, running with him and chasing him.

A fierce longing for his mate pierced through Leo with such intensity that he suddenly stopped and let out a deep and penetrating howl, an excruciating cry of despair.

He couldn't understand why he was suddenly pining for his mate, why he was thinking of his family and his best friend. He understood well enough that they had their own lives to get on with. But it had been days and he just wanted someone to be himself with, to let go and know that the other person would be there to hold him, and support him. Leo blamed the full moon for these emotions. It always made him sappy.

Leo generally had the most classes in common with Sean but since he was a human, Leo hung out with Jake and their other friend Ross on full moons. Unfortunately, that meant having to deal with Tonya's mean personality as well, who was always following Ross around. This time Jake had invited Anna, a wolf from one of Jake's classes, as well. Which sort of made Leo feel like he was intruding on a double date and being the undesirable fifth wheel. Everyone gathered around Leo though, after his high-pitched howl. Jake came over to rub his paw over Leo's head, as a way to comfort him.

An angry, deafening growl filled the clearing, however, before Jake could touch Leo.

Aleksandr.

Leo's heart started thumping erratically at the sight of his mate. Even though Leo's human, logical side of the brain knew he was still angry with Sasha, his wolf didn't care and was overjoyed at the first sight of his mate in days. Leo's wolf had more basic instincts and emotions he followed due to which he could feel his tail waving haphazardly.

The sheer size of the wolf stalking towards him was majestic with a luminous sheen in his black coat with thick, dense underfur. He had strong long legs and a high body with a broad skull tapering to a narrow muzzle and a bushy black tail. This was his mate, Aleksandr.

This was his Alpha.

And the Alpha of others who followed him. Now that Leo looked behind Aleksandr, he could see a pack of wolves filling the clearing and sniffing around, picking up smells. Probably identifying wolves with their scents. The ones directly behind Aleksandr were all staring at Leo, however. Gauging. Waiting for Leo's reaction.

Aleksandr still had his fangs bared out and he could see how scary that might look to Jake and others. They had already taken a step back and bowed, in submission, even though they were not in Aleksandr's pack and had no obligation to do so. Wolves only showed submission to their Alpha. Or in defeat. They must have recognized Aleksandr's vigor and sensed the danger emanating from Aleksandr's tightly controlled body. The body with eyes burning holes in Leo's smaller stature. Still waiting for Leo to bow and show his neck.

Accept him as his Alpha.

Leo could feel every muscle in his body itching to do that, itching to show his submission and have his Alpha acknowledge him. Have his mate accept him and touch him and mark him. He could feel his instincts giving in, his wolf being giddy with Sasha's scent overwhelming him.

But the despair Leo had felt moments earlier at having his mate abandon him suddenly, without a word for days, resurfaced and stopped Leo from baring his neck. He couldn't give in to Aleksandr so easily. So what if he was the big mighty Alpha?

He was also Leo's mate and he was damn angry at his mate.

So, Leo took a step back and pretended to bow his head slightly to fool his damn mate of his submission and just when Aleksandr lowered his guard, Leo did what he had when he first encountered his mate.

He ran.
