"I'm not leaving your side," I reminded Bakugou for the fifth time today, my voice firm yet gentle. The morning sun cast a soft glow on us as we walked side by side toward his school entrance. I had taken a week off from university to accompany him, not just because of his injury, but to ensure he stayed safe. I couldn't bear the thought of him getting hurt again.
"I'm fine, I said," he groaned, though he didn't push me away. His tough exterior might fool others, but I knew he appreciated my concern.
As we approached the school, curious eyes followed us. Whispers floated around, students speculating about the short girl beside Bakugou. Some recognized me from our outings with Kanami, but many were seeing me for the first time.
"Who's that with Bakugou?"
"Isn't she the girl who's always with his sister?"
"Why is she here?"
Ignoring the murmurs, I kept my focus on Bakugou. "If you need anything, anything at all, just tell me, okay?" I said softly.
He gave a small nod, his tough demeanour faltering for a moment. "Yeah, yeah, I will."
The first class was uneventful, though I could feel the eyes of the other students on us. I sat beside Bakugou, ready to act if he needed me. When he shifted in his seat, I immediately leaned over. "You okay?"
He rolled his eyes. "I'm fine, Mari. Really."
I bit my lip, feeling foolish but unable to shake my worry. The memory of his bloodied form was still too fresh in my mind.
During lunch, I hovered even more. Bakugou was trying to eat, but I kept fussing over him. "Do you need more water? How's your stomach? Do you want me to get you something else to eat?"
"Mari, you're gonna drive me crazy," he grumbled, but there was a hint of a smile on his lips. "I'm not made of glass, you know."
"I know," I said, sitting back a little but still keeping a watchful eye on him.
As the day progressed, I found myself calming down a bit. Bakugou seemed to be managing well, and his friends were supportive, though they did give me strange looks.
"Is she your bodyguard now, Bakugou?" one of his classmates joked.
"Something like that," he replied, his tone making clear he didn't mind.
In the afternoon, during a break between classes, we sat under a tree in the school courtyard. The autumn leaves were a brilliant mix of red, orange, and yellow, creating a picturesque scene.
"Hey," Bakugou said, his voice softer than usual. "Thanks for looking out for me."
I smiled, touched by his gratitude. "Always, Katsuki. I just... I can't lose you."
He sighed, looking at the ground. "I'm not going anywhere, Mari. But you need to take care of yourself too, okay? Don't forget that."
I nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. "Okay, deal."
As the final bell rang and we prepared to leave, I couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. The day had gone smoothly, and Bakugou was okay. I knew I couldn't protect him from everything, but for today, at least, I had kept him safe.
Walking home together, I glanced up at him. "See? We survived the day."
He chuckled. "Yeah, we did. Thanks to you."
"Always," I repeated, slipping my hand into his. "Always."
We reached his house and stepped inside, the familiar warmth greeting us. The scent of home was comforting, a mix of fresh laundry and the faint aroma of spices from previous meals. I tossed my bag onto the couch and turned to Bakugou.
"Want to hang out for a bit?" I asked.
He nodded. "Sure. What do you want to do?"
I thought for a moment. "How about we make some snacks and watch a movie? Kanami should be home soon, and she can join us."
"Sounds good," he agreed, heading to the kitchen. I followed him, enjoying the rare moments when he let his guard down.
We rummaged through the pantry and fridge, pulling out ingredients for our snacks. I decided to make some popcorn while Bakugou prepared a plate of assorted fruits and cheese. As we worked, we chatted about our day, slipping into an easy rhythm.
"Do you remember that time we tried to make cookies and almost burned the kitchen down?" I laughed, recalling the chaotic memory.
Bakugou smirked. "Yeah, you were the one who forgot to set the timer."
"Hey, you were supposed to be watching them too!" I retorted, giggling.
Just then, the front door opened, and Kanami walked in, her face lighting up when she saw us in the kitchen. "Hey, you two! What's going on?"
"We're making snacks and planning a movie night," I said, waving her over.
"Perfect timing," Bakugou added, slicing up an apple with precise movements.
Kanami grinned and set her bag down. "Count me in! What movie are we watching?"
"Not sure yet," I admitted. "We were just about to pick one."
With our snacks ready, we moved to the living room and settled onto the couch. Bakugou handed me the remote, and I started scrolling through the movie options. Kanami sat beside me, peeking over my shoulder.
"How about a classic?" Kanami suggested. "Something like Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro."
"Ooh, I love those," I agreed, stopping on Spirited Away. "What do you think, Bakugou?"
Bakugou shrugged but had a small smile on his face. "Fine by me."
We started the movie, and I snuggled into the couch, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. As the film played, we munched on our snacks and exchanged comments about our favourite scenes. The cozy atmosphere made everything feel perfect.
Halfway through the movie, Bakugou leaned over to Kanami. "Thanks for forcing me to go out today," he muttered, barely audible.
Kanami smirked and nudged him playfully. "See? I told you it would be good for you."
"Yeah, yeah," he grumbled, but I could see the appreciation in his eyes.
As the credits rolled, we stretched and yawned, basking in the comfortable silence that followed. The evening had turned out better than I had hoped, filled with laughter, good company, and the comforting routine of being together.
"Let's do this more often," I said softly, breaking the silence.
Kanami nodded. "Definitely. It's nice to just relax and enjoy each other's company."
Bakugou didn't say anything, but the content look on his face said it all. We didn't need many words to express how much these moments meant to us.
With the dishes cleaned up and the living room tidied, we eventually said our goodnights. As I headed home, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that despite everything, we always had each other's backs.
And that was enough.
