I woke up to an unusual quietness in the house. It was the weekend, and for the first time in a long while, Marinette wasn't here. The absence of her soft laughter and cheerful voice left a void I couldn't ignore. I dragged myself out of bed and headed downstairs, finding Kanami just waking up in the kitchen.
"Hey, where's Marinette?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"Morning to you too," she yawned, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "She's hanging out with Hiroshi today. They have plans for the weekend."
"Hiroshi?" I spat the name out like it was poison.
"Yeah, the new guy from her university. They're spending the day together. Isn't it great? She deserves a nice guy."
I felt my blood boil. A nice guy? As if I wasn't good enough. "Whatever," I muttered, storming out of the house before Kanami could say anything else.
I wandered aimlessly, my mind consumed with thoughts of Marinette and this Hiroshi guy. I didn't know where I was going, but I didn't care. I needed to clear my head. As I walked, I suddenly heard the sound that haunted my dreams—Marinette's giggles. I looked up and saw her, my angel, in a cute floral dress, walking with a tall guy with brown hair. Hiroshi.
They were laughing, looking so happy together. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. I glared at the ground, my jealousy consuming me.
"Bakugou!? Hi!" Her voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I felt her arms wrap around my waist, making me tense up.
"What are you doing here all alone? Where's Kanami?" She asked, looking up at me with those big, bluebell eyes that always made my heart skip a beat.
"I—" I started, but her new boyfriend interrupted.
"Who's this?" Hiroshi asked, eyeing me curiously.
"This is Bakugou! My best friend's brother! Bakugou, this is Hiroshi!" Marinette introduced us with her usual cheerfulness.
We exchanged stiff nods, both sizing each other up. He was slightly shorter than me, but that didn't make me feel any better.
"Anyways, Bakugou. You ok?" Marinette's concern was evident in her eyes.
"Yeah," I nodded, forcing a smile. "Just out for a walk."
"Well, it's good to see you," she said, still holding onto me. "We were just heading to a café. Wanna join us?"
My first instinct was to say yes, to stay close to her and keep an eye on this Hiroshi guy. But the jealousy was too much. I didn't want to see them together any longer. "Nah, I'm good. You guys have fun."
"Okay," she smiled, letting go of me. "See you later, then."
I nodded and watched them walk away, her laughter echoing in my ears. I turned around and walked in the opposite direction, my heart heavy with jealousy and frustration. I needed to find a way to deal with these feelings before they tore me apart.
Marinette's POV:
After a fun day with Hiroshi, I walked back to my apartment, feeling content but tired. As I took the elevator up, I hummed a little tune to myself, the day's events playing back in my mind. When I reached my door, I stopped in my tracks. Someone was sitting against it.
"Bakugou?" I asked, recognizing him. I bent down to see him sleeping, his usually intense expression softened in slumber. He looked so peaceful, so serene. Gently, I ran my hand through his hair, brushing it away from his face.
"Hm? Mari?" he mumbled, his eyes still closed. His deep voice sent a shiver down my spine, making me blush.
"Hey... what are you doing here?" I whispered, continuing to run my fingers through his hair.
"Mhm..." he hummed, stretching his back and groaning. "What happened? What time is it?"
"Currently 11:30... pm," I replied, checking my watch.
"You just got back?" He looked at me, his eyes now fully open and alert.
"Yep."
"Did he walk you here?" he asked, a hint of irritation in his voice.
"No... we walked halfway—"
"Fucking bullshit," he muttered, standing up. "Open the door."
I fumbled with my keys and opened the door. We walked inside, and I headed straight to the kitchen to grab some snacks. Bakugou followed me, looking around my apartment with a critical eye.
"So, what did you two do today?" he asked, trying to sound casual but failing miserably.
"We went to the park, had some ice cream, and then walked around the mall. It was really fun," I said, smiling as I recounted the day.
Bakugou's expression darkened with every word. "Sounds... nice," he said through gritted teeth.
"It was," I replied, grabbing some chips and soda from the pantry. "Want some?"
"Sure," he muttered, sitting down on the couch. I joined him, handing him a can of soda and a bowl of chips.
"So, you like this guy?" he asked, trying to sound indifferent but failing miserably.
"I mean, he's a good friend. I don't know him well enough to say I like him like that," I replied, shrugging.
Bakugou's frown deepened. "Still, he should've walked you all the way home. Letting you walk alone at night is bullshit. You deserve better than that."
I looked at him, surprised by his intensity. "Bakugou... it's not that big of a deal. I can take care of myself."
"That's not the point," he snapped, then took a deep breath. "You deserve someone who looks out for you, who makes sure you're safe."
I was taken aback by his concern. "Thank you, Bakugou. That's sweet of you to say."
He looked away, his cheeks tinged with red. "Whatever. Just... don't trust that guy too much."
"I won't," I promised, smiling at him. "He's just a friend."
After a while, we finished our snacks, and I yawned, stretching. "You can stay over if you want. You look tired."
"Thanks," he said, standing up. "I'll crash on the couch."
I handed him a blanket and pillow, then turned to go to my room.
"Hey, Mari," he called, stopping me in my tracks.
"Yeah?"
He smirked, pulling off his shirt and revealing his toned chest. "I usually sleep naked, just so you know."
I squealed, covering my eyes and running to my room, hearing his deep laugh behind me. "Goodnight, Bakugou!" I shouted from behind my door.
"Goodnight, Mari," he chuckled, settling down on the couch.
As I lay in bed, my heart pounding, I couldn't help but smile. Maybe Bakugou had a point. Maybe I did deserve someone who would look out for me. And maybe that someone was closer than I thought.
