In the darkness, he held a single candle up to the piece of paper. He had already read the parchment hundreds of times, but it was almost as if he was looking for something more in her writing."She abandoned us, brother. I don't understand what your stupid fascination is all about!"
Gyutaro hating looking at his sister now. She looked nothing like how she used to. Her beautiful, perfect white hair was now midnight black. It wasn't like her at all. The worst of it all, is that she couldn't even remember her own name. As such, she insisted on being called Daki.
What an ugly name, he thought.
The tip of his finger would travel around the two splotches that stained the letter. Over and over, he would trace circles around them. Were they her tears, or accidental imperfections when the piece of paper was made?
He hated having any light at all. The splotchy patches of black on his skin made him frown. His eyes skimmed over the words one more time, and then he blew out the candlelight.
They still resided in his childhood home, but the house was starting to fall apart. There was a large hole in the ceiling that occurred from rain puddling on the roof. The pair of siblings made sure to completely stay away from the light that would shine in during the day. As it was now nightfall, Gyutaro sat under the destroyed ceiling and roof.
Daki picked up another finger, breaking it into two separate pieces before nibbling on them as a snack. The person who the finger belonged to lay in the corner, long already dead. Gyutaro could only make out that her hair was light in color, but blood stained the crown of her head.
"Don't feel bad; it's what we have to do to survive." The crunching of bones made Gyutaro grimace. Daki finished her small snack, but then reached for another piece. Her stomach continued to growl as she ate the entire finger in one bite.
"Nngh-!"
She coughed violently, clutching her throat and trying to dig whatever was stuck in her throat out. Gyutaro rolled his eyes, standing up and walking to her bent form.
Two smacks to her upper back helped Daki spit out the object. It landed on the floor with a 'clink'. She heavily huffed, still trying to control her breathing.
"Imagine how hilarious it would be if you actually died from that." Daki snarled at his chiding comments.
Her hands sifted across the floor, eventually finding what she had been choking on. Chuckling, she held up the object for Gyutaro to see.
"You were so obsessed with these things back then...it's also your fault for what happened." She cackled as she threw the ring at her brother's face. Even after seeing how distraught he became, Daki still continued to laugh and make fun of him.
"Y/N never would have said yes. You were always a ticking time bomb. I'm glad she left!"
He had no reaction to her insults. His mind had wondered far elsewhere. As he stared down at the small ring in his palm, Gyutaro began to think of what could have been.
She would have worn something light and modest. He would have wanted to have the ceremony during the daytime, so that the sun would make her shine brighter amongst everyone. Hell, he didn't want any attendees. It would have just been Y/N, Gyutaro, and Ume. They could have had it by the riverbank where the water was always crystal blue. There would have been no disturbances. No one would interfere, and the three of them would celebrate.
"She wasn't even that pretty...I can't believe-"
"-Can you stop being so fucking negative? Don't forget that I'm the reason why you're even alive!" Rising to his full height, Daki realized he had continued to grow even after their transformation. He had become way taller over the course of a year.
Daki started to cry, sniffling and rubbing at her nose. She pursed her lips in an attempt to look younger, more innocent. It barely worked, with Gyutaro taking a step back.
"...I told you to stay away from married people. It'll draw more attention." He crushed the ring, letting the tiny fragments fall like ash.
"Fine, I will." she looked to the corpse, annoyed that it had lost all of its warmth. There was no point in feasting on it anymore. "Oh, and give me that letter. It's only making you hurt more. I don't like seeing my brother upset!"
She reached towards his pocket, just barely touching the piece of paper. Daki gasped as she was harshly thrown backwards. The wall nearly fell apart at the brute force.
"You know what that means to me, how dare you try and take it?"
Stumbling to her feet, she cursed before storming outside. Gyutaro felt relieved that she didn't clap back with anymore smart comments. It was so dreary inside his home, but he had nowhere else to go. If only he hadn't blew the candlelight out, he could have passed more time by reading Y/N's letter.
He wondered what she was doing. Was she successful in following her mother's footsteps? Gyutaro remembered begging the crow to tell him where Y/N was, but he only cawed in response before flying away.
It was depressing how he didn't even have the luxury of dreaming. He was always awake, and never in a relaxed state of sleep. The only way of entertainment was to daydream about things, but he was always snapped back to reality. Gyutaro hated having to sustain himself by finding victims. Even though they tasted horrible, he would specifically find the meanest, most annoying people to take. They surprisingly happened to be handsome men with an ugly personality.
Daki always teased him for not eating women. She liked to call him soft. It was nothing like that, and there were quite a few horrible women that needed to be gone anyway. He just happened to think of Y/N during those moments, and would instead pawn off the woman to Daki. If they were beautiful, she loved it. When they were ugly, she preferred to just kill them instead.
Gyutaro gasped in pain, swatting at his arm thinking something had bitten him. There was nothing but sun kissing his skin, which led to a terrible burning sensation. Scurrying back to the dark corner, he held his knees together and shut his eyes.
Always the same, depressing cycle. Nothing else in life to do except hide like some monster. He was a monster. Y/N was adamant in getting rid of beings like him.
He hoped that she would spare him when the time came.
