They did not wait very long to start the experiments. The next day, six guards came down from the spiral stairs and unlocked the cell bars.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked them. Nobody answered me, they just grabbed my shoulders and took me up the stairs. This place was like a maze, I couldn't understand the layout no matter how hard I tried to remember it. The ceilings were tall and the walls and floor were bright. It was rather pretty.
The guards stopped me at a door. It was a lonely door in a narrow hallway, when they opened it, the room revealed was depressing. It was a medium-sized lab with a tall white bed in the middle of it, white counters to the left, all white complicated equipment. On the back wall, there was dark glass that greatly contrasted the blinding brightness of the rest of the room.
It took up until that moment to understand that they were taking me to be experimented on, but when I realized, my mouth instantly became dry and my heart sank. Two of the guards guided me toward the bed and lifted me up onto it. There were two other monsters in the room standing by the bed dressed in white lab coats.
My eyes darted around the room, trying to assess this situation. There was a table beside the bed full of medical tools.
The six royal guards separated in half, one half standing by the outside of the room, and the other three going through a door on the black glass wall. Oh, I see. There's a room behind it, so the glass must be one-sided.
Oh, I'm going to hate this. I don't even know what they are planning but I know its awful. There were many monsters walking in and out through the rooms, settling things and talking amongst themselves. They were waiting for someone, apparently. Asgore stood outside the room, making sure everyone was on track. What are they all standing around for, though?
The door to the hallway creaked open for the hundredth time. I was expecting it to be yet another guard, but the monster revealed was familiar.
Alphys's eyes met mine. She gasped, quickly turning back around and left as soon as she came.
I heard speaking on the other side of the door.
Asgore's low voice spoke, friendly, "What is it, Dr. Alphys? Did you forget something?""You never said the test subject was gonna be a human child! You... that's a very important thing to forget to mention!!"
"I'm sorry, Alphys, but we were in a public space. I had to be cryptic, we couldn't risk worrying the citizens, could we?"
"I refuse to do it, Asgore. It's wrong, it's just pure evil."
Their voices got lower and it was difficult to hear them. Asgore sighed, I think, then said "Do you really mean that, Alphys? You do understand that turning this down puts your job at risk, right?"
"Yes, I refuse. It's cruel. Even you must admit, this isn't like you." Alphys continued, but it was too quiet to hear. There was silence. Asgore's voice was frustrated, "I know it's out of character. That's why whatever happens here stays in that room, alright? I know what your getting at, you're a pacifist. But this is for the good of everyone, and whatever happens, the dust won't be on your hands."
"But her blood will..." Alphys said almost inaudibly.
Asgore suddenly interjected, "Wait, come back! Alphys, you must think that what you're doing is noble, but you quitting won't stop the tests. We'd just have to hire somebody else to replace you. You're the best scientist, so your replacement would no doubt be less diligent. There would be more mistakes, more tests, more drastic measures..."Alphys must have walked away from the door at some point, because when she spoke, I couldn't hear anything. Asgore replied to her, "You're free to leave the experiment at any time, then."
