*5 months later*

Her feet pounded against the cold asphalt in fast steps. Her staggering breaths escaped in the form of condensating clouds. Hyein looked behind herself multiple times, her heartbeat picking up with her speed.

Not many metres behind herself, they were chasing her.

Not alive, but not dead yet.
Not decomposing but not healthy as well.
Not slow but also not the fastest.

Their bodies were lanky, as if they have been starving for years now, and their skin was grey. Their bodies were covered on holes that leaked some kind of black goop that stunk worse than sulfur. Their faces were not proper but a random arrangement of three eyes and one big mouth that stretched with a hundred daggers for teeth.

They were also known by the name Gnarlers because of the constant rumbling that emits from their throats.

Absolutely horrifying.

They were the unfortunate outcome of a failed experiment and now humanity has to suffer because someone tried to play god.

Gnarlers don't turn humans by killing them, no, they usually completely devour the bodies of their victims, including their bones. The reason why their population has grown this much is because getting hurt by them, which was only possible through skin to skin contact, infected the human organism.

Most of the times, while fighting them, the people don't even realise that they scratched their skin. Sometimes, they don't realize they were slightly scratched on their ankles, and sometimes they were too ignorant to kill themselves once they found out, hoping that news of a cure are going to be announced while they are still sane, still human, still salvageable.

That's how their population grew and humans started to die out.

Fast forward to today. Now, how did Hyein find herself in her current situation? Getting chased by about eight of those terrific creatures as she sprinted through the streets, her breaths falling shorter and shorter and her legs cramping and burning the longer she was running.

Sweat tickled down her skin like a waterfall and she wheezed.

Goddamit.

They were starting to catch up.

Small tears of frustration collected at the corners of her eyes as she rounded another corner, supporting herself on the wall.

Is this the day I die?

The acidic smell got stronger and their gurgling noises louder, Hyein's heart turned heavy when she rounded another corner and found herself in a dead end.

"Shit.", she wheezed out as she turned around, just to fall back on her back when one of the Gurglers appeared right in front of her, almost touching her.

Hyein's eyes widened in fear, her limbs trembled and she shufflef backwards as more of them spilled into the dead end.

Death was knocking at Yang Hyein's door and they were having direct eye contact through the peep hole of her entrance.

Taking in a large breath, she pushed herself up to be back on her legs and quickly turned around, searching for some way she could still save herself.

In the right corner, there was a metal container just about the size of a human. If she could elevate herself on top, maybe she could gain some spare minutes.
She quickly ran and jumped grasping the edge and pushing herself up just in time before one of their claws could tears her lower thigh into shreds.
