The Heeler household was finally quiet. The hustle and bustle of the day had faded into a serene nighttime stillness. Blitzø sat on the couch, flicking through the channels on the TV. Most of the programs were unfamiliar, but he settled on a late-night talk show, the host's cheerful banter providing a soothing background noise.
Blitzø leaned back, letting out a tired sigh. The day had been more draining than he'd expected. Between dealing with Muffin's boundless energy and keeping himself from acting out, he felt exhausted. He was just beginning to relax when a gentle tap on his shoulder made him jump.
Turning around, he found Bingo standing there, clutching a stuffed toy. Her big, innocent eyes looked up at him, filled with a mixture of curiosity and shyness.
"Hey, kid," Blitzø said, trying to keep his voice soft. "What are you doing up this late?" It Was Nine And Bingo Was Supposed To Be Asleep By 7:30.
Bingo shuffled her feet. "I couldn't sleep. Can you read me a bedtime story?"
Blitzø's first instinct was to refuse. Bedtime stories weren't exactly his thing. But the hopeful look on Bingo's face made him reconsider. With a reluctant sigh, he nodded.
"Alright, alright. Go grab a book, and I'll read it to you."
Bingo's face lit up with a bright smile, and she quickly scampered off to her room, returning moments later with a well-worn storybook clutched in her hands. Blitzø took the book and followed her to her bedroom, which was decorated with colorful posters and cozy blankets.
As Bingo climbed into bed, Blitzø pulled up a chair and sat down, opening the book. He cleared his throat, trying to adopt a more gentle tone.
"Alright, let's see what we've got here. 'Once upon a time, in a faraway land...'"
Blitzø read the story, his voice gradually softening as he got into the rhythm of the tale. It was a classic bedtime story about a brave knight and a beautiful princess, filled with adventure and magic. As he read, he found himself getting lost in the narrative, his usual bravado giving way to a rare tenderness.
Bingo listened intently, her eyes wide with wonder. She occasionally giggled or gasped at the exciting parts, her reactions genuine and heartfelt. Blitzø couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm.
"...and they lived happily ever after," Blitzø finished, closing the book with a flourish.
Bingo beamed up at him. "That was a great story! Thank you, Blitzø." She then yawned.
Blitzø smiled, feeling a warmth in his chest that was unfamiliar but not unwelcome. "You're welcome, kid. Now get some sleep, alright?"
Bingo nodded, snuggling down into her blankets. "Will you stay until I fall asleep?"
Blitzø hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Sure, why not?"
He sat back in the chair, watching as Bingo's eyes slowly fluttered shut. The room was filled with a peaceful silence, broken only by the soft sound of her breathing. Blitzø found himself feeling unexpectedly content. In this moment, surrounded by the simple innocence of a child's room, he felt a sense of belonging that he rarely experienced.
As Bingo drifted off to sleep, Blitzø quietly stood up, careful not to make any noise. He placed the book on the bedside table and tiptoed out of the room, gently closing the door behind him.
Returning to the living room, Blitzø sat back down on the couch, the events of the day playing through his mind. He realized that despite the events and the unfamiliarity of this world, there were moments of genuine connection that made it all worthwhile.
With a sigh, Blitzø turned off the TV and leaned back, a small smile playing on his lips. Maybe this place wasn't so bad after all. And maybe, just maybe, he could learn to fit in here, even if just for a little while.
As he closed his eyes, ready to call it a night, he thought about Bingo and her request for a bedtime story. It was a small thing, but it had made a big difference. For the first time in a long while, Blitzø felt like he had done something truly good.
And that was a feeling worth holding onto.
