Running into the kitchen to find Gran collapsed on the floor was awful.
But what was more awful was not knowing what to do. I crouched down next to her but then my body froze. I couldn't even call out her name or check to see if she was okay I was just stunned.
Jimin phoned an ambulance.
When they arrived Gran had already regained consciousness and was talking, the ambulance crew started speaking to me but all I could do was nod. Jimin conversed with them for me and drove us both to the hospital while Gran went via ambulance.
Now we're both sitting in the waiting room.
I bounce my leg up and down and stare at the clock on the wall opposite, my hands clenched tightly into fists. Half an hour we've been waiting, half an hour! How long does it take to tell us something, anything!?
"Layla. Layla?"
What if something worse has happened and they don't want to tell us yet? What if-
"Ah!" I'm jolted out of my thoughts by Jimin pressing a cold bottle of water to the back of my neck. I turn and look at him "When did you get that?"
"A while ago." He sits down next to me. "Here."
"I'm not thirsty." He stares at me holding the bottle up in the air. "Okay, fine." I take a swig but then end up drinking half the bottle.
I hand the drink back to him "Thanks," He takes a sip.
I look back at the clock and bounce my leg up and down again, Jimin presses the water into my leg "She's going to be fine Layla."
"We don't know that."
"She was awake and talking before they put her in the ambulance."
"Then why has it been thirty-five minutes since she got here and no one has told us anything!?" Various other people in the waiting room look at me due to my outburst.
I sigh and rub my face with my hands.
"Ms Hill? Ms Layla Hill?" A nurse walks into the waiting room.
I shoot out of my seat "Yes!"
The nurse walks over to me and Jimin "Your grandmother Mrs Stone is doing well, she's just having an MRI and then we'll do a blood test as well just to double-check everything."
"But she's okay?"
"Yes she's very chatty," The nurse pats my shoulder "Don't worry pet, you'll be able to see her soon." The nurse smiles before walking away.
I slump back down in my seat. At least she's okay.
"So she's your grandmother on your mum's side then?" Jimin asks.
"Hm?"
"Your Gran."
"What? Oh no...she's my Gran on my dad's side." I rub the back of my neck.
"Oh, but I thought..."
"I've got my mum's surname...my parents never married."
"Oh, I see..."
I sigh and turn to face Jimin "My parents had me at sixteen, my dad stayed for a bit but then...he died when I was two." I shrug my shoulders.
Jimin's face creases into a sorrowful expression "I'm sorry Layla."
"It's fine. I didn't even know him."
"And your mum?" He asks tentatively.
I grit my teeth "We don't talk."
