With the engagement ceremony behind them and the wedding date approaching, both families dived into preparations. Each task brought with it a mix of excitement and a sense of urgency. Central to these preparations were the purchases of the thali (mangalsutra), traditional wedding attire, and the gifts Lavanya's family would give her for her new life.
The Thali and Wedding Attire
The Thali
The thali is a sacred thread that symbolizes the marital bond, and its selection was an important task for both families. Varun, along with his parents Meena and Raghavan, went to a trusted jeweler in Chennai to choose the thali.
The jeweler showed them a variety of designs, each one unique and traditional. They finally settled on a beautifully crafted gold thali adorned with small, intricate carvings of the goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing prosperity and protection. It was simple yet elegant, perfectly fitting their middle-class sensibilities while upholding tradition.
Pattu Saree and Dhoti
On another shopping trip, Varun's family selected a stunning pattu (silk) saree for Lavanya. The saree was a deep red with intricate gold zari work along the borders, reflecting tradition and elegance.
Lavanya's family also made their preparations. They selected a handsome wedding shirt and veshti (another form of traditional attire) with a golden border , keeping in line with traditional Tamil wedding attire. for Varun to wear during the ceremony, ensuring he looked his best on their special day.
