Fire
The city is alive with its usual hustle and bustle as I make my way to see Katherine. Her apartment complex is nestled in a quiet corner, a stark contrast to the chaotic world I navigate daily. I can't help but feel a sense of excitement as I approach her door.
I knock, and after a moment, the door swings open. Katherine stands there, looking surprised but pleased to see me.
"Cruz," she greets, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "What brings you here?"
I lean against the doorframe, giving her my best charming smile. "Can't a guy just visit a beautiful lady without an ulterior motive?"
She laughs, shaking her head. "Knowing you, there's always an ulterior motive."
"Maybe," I admit, stepping inside. "But today, I'm here for purely innocent reasons. I wanted to see how you're doing."
Katherine arches an eyebrow, clearly skeptical. "Really? No hidden agenda?"
"Really," I say, holding up my hands in mock surrender. "Okay, maybe a small one. How about we call it a social call with benefits?"
She rolls her eyes but can't hide her amusement. "And what are these 'benefits' you speak of?"
I step closer, lowering my voice conspiratorially. "I need a date for a business party. And I can't think of anyone I'd rather have by my side than you."
Katherine laughs again, a light, musical sound that makes my chest tighten. "A business party? You want me to be your date for a business party?"
"Yes," I say, trying to look as earnest as possible. "It'll be fun. Free food, drinks, and you get to dress up and impress everyone with how stunning you look."
She crosses her arms, pretending to consider it. "I don't know, Cruz. Sounds like you're just trying to use me."
"Maybe a little," I admit, grinning. "But mostly, I just want to spend time with you. Come on, it'll be fun. Plus, it'll make me look good in front of my associates."
Katherine sighs, shaking her head. "You really don't give up, do you?"
"Nope," I say cheerfully. "Not when it comes to something—or someone—I want."
She bites her lip, clearly torn. "Okay, fine. I'll go with you."
"Yes!" I exclaim, pumping my fist in victory. "You won't regret it, I promise."
She laughs again, shaking her head. "You better not make me regret this, Cruz."
"I wouldn't dream of it," I assure her, a wide smile spreading across my face. "I'll pick you up at seven. Wear something that will make everyone's jaws drop."
