FIRE

I sit beside Katherine, my eyes fixed on her unmoving form. The faintest flicker catches my attention—her eyelids twitch, just enough to notice. My instinct sharpens, and for a split second, hope surges through me. Maybe this time, she'll open her eyes, maybe I'll finally see her wake. But the moment passes just as quickly as it came. Her eyes stay closed. Her body doesn't move.

This has been going on for a week—these small, useless signs that remind me she's still in there, but not enough to mean anything. Every flicker builds hope, and every time, it dies just as fast. She's still here, but not really. And with each day that passes, it grates on me.

I sit in silence, watching, waiting. Then, it happens again—another movement. This time, something's different. Her eyelids flutter, and slowly, they open. My breath catches, but I don't let myself celebrate. Not yet.

"Katherine," I call her name, my voice low, controlled.

Nothing. No response. She's staring at the ceiling, eyes wide but empty, like she's seeing something far beyond this room. I want to snap her out of it, make her come back, but I stay where I am. After two weeks of nothing, this is something. Small progress, maybe. It has to be. I tell myself it's a good sign, though it doesn't feel like enough.

I step out of the room to meet with the doctor. His calm demeanor grates on me, but I wait for him to speak.

"She's regained consciousness fully," he says, like it's a victory. "But recovery will take time. For now, she won't hear, see, or move. Her brain needs time to heal."

I clench my jaw. "But she opened her eyes. That's a good sign, right?"

He nods, and I catch the faintest hint of hope in his voice. "Yes, a very good sign. She's fighting. With her strength, I expect her to recover faster than most. Given what she's been through... many wouldn't have survived. But Katherine, she's stronger than most. I have confidence she'll recover more quickly than we've seen in similar cases."

The doctor's words echo in my mind as I walk back into the room, but I can't show weakness. Not here, not now. Katherine's eyes are still open, unfocused, and motionless. My jaw tightens. She's strong, a fighter, and I know she'll pull through. But it's going to take time. Time I don't have.

My phone buzzes in my pocket. I glance at the name—Ethan my assistant. I pick up, not bothering to hide the edge in my voice.

"Mr.Romano, you have a meeting regarding the shipment. There's been an issue with the delivery schedule. Marcus wants to talk only with you, It's urgent."

There's always something. The world doesn't stop spinning because Katherine's lying here like this. If anything, my enemies will smell blood in the water, and I can't afford to show weakness.
