FIRE
I stand behind Thomas, arms crossed, my eyes locked on the images flashing across the monitors. We've been at this for hours, combing through footage of the hospital, the university, and now Katherine's apartment.
No sign of her anywhere.
I lean in closer as Thomas rewinds the footage once more. His fingers fly across the keyboard, but even he seems frustrated with the lack of answers.
"Still nothing," he mutters under his breath.
I grit my teeth, forcing myself to stay calm. "Go back to the 17th. Check if she returned to the apartment at any point."
Thomas rewinds the footage to the previous day, the screens flickering through hours of footage in fast motion. The front entrance of Katherine's apartment building is deserted, save for a few residents coming and going. No sign of her.
"Pause it," I command.
Thomas stops the footage on the early hours of March 17. The time stamp shows 3:15 a.m. "She wasn't there on the 17th either. That's two days she's been completely off the radar."
Thomas glances over his shoulder at me. "If she wasn't at the hospital, the university, or the apartment..."
"She's been gone longer than we thought," I finish for him. The realization tightens my chest. Whoever planned this, they were thorough, wiping her trail clean long before anyone noticed.
Thomas shakes his head, turning back to the screen. "Do you want me to pull up more public footage around the apartment? Maybe we missed something."
"Do it," I say. "Check everything. I need to know if she was seen anywhere. I need answers."
As Thomas pulls up footage from nearby streets, I let my thoughts run wild. Katherine wasn't where she was supposed to be.
The footage starts playing, street cameras from different angles, showing people walking by, cars passing.
"I'm going to check her apartment," I say, already heading for the door. "Maybe there's something there."
----------
The receptionist barely glances up as I approach the desk. Her bored expression annoys me, but I don't have time for pleasantries.
"I need the keys to Katherine's apartment," I say, my voice flat.
Her eyes widen slightly, then narrow in suspicion. "I can't just give you the keys. That's against the rules."
I lean forward, my gaze hard. "Call the manager."
She hesitates, her hand hovering over the phone. "The manager... isn't here."
"Then when will he be back?" I ask, growing impatient.
