CHAPTER 3
The elevator ride up was filled with more silence. I noticed that vampires – at least, the older ones I've met aren't big talkers. Perhaps they've spoken enough in their lifetimes and just speak when they have something important to say. I could be wrong in that assessment. Who knows?
The elevator had mirrored walls, allowing me to look at my make-up and ensure that I hadn't smeared the crimson from my lips all over my face. I could see Kian looking at me through the veil of my hair.
"You did a good job covering that wound," he said, his voice as reserved and cool as usual. Good. I felt a weird vibe in the car.
"Thanks. I've had much practice," I said, turning around and flashing Kian a big smile. He returned the smile with one of his own. The elevator chimed, and the doors opened. Kian held out his arm for me, and I took it. I was feeling pretty; it was my birthday, and I was gonna have some fun tonight.
"Oh, and to answer your question earlier, I would hardly call diamonds rhinestones," he said smoothly and stepped out of the elevator.
"What!" I exclaimed and yanked him back in with me. Once we were clear of the doors, I hit the button to close them. About fifty sets of eyes were on us as the doors closed, but I didn't care.
"Kian! I can't go around wearing diamonds all over my dress," I hissed.
"And shoes," he added.
This was ridiculous. The dress and shoes must have cost a fortune. I wasn't even going to bother asking about the diamond jewelry.
"Do you wish for me to disrobe you? You can walk around with the undergarment if you wish," he replied. His tone was one of amusement.
"This isn't funny. I might as well walk around with a sign on my back that reads, 'Please rob me.' Seriously, it's just too much pressure for a girl like me to handle." He just smiled and took my hand.
"Think nothing of it. Besides, we are in a room full of friends and bodyguards. Do you honestly think that anyone would dare harm a single hair on your head when you are next to me?"
I mulled that over and realized that he had a point. Dammit. I surrendered and bowed my head in defeat yet again.
"Now, if you are done sulking, we have a party to attend," he finally said. I heaved a heavy, audible sigh just before he pressed the elevator button. Once the doors opened again, we made our way out and into the room.
I was wrong; there must have been more than a hundred people in the room. I slid closer to Kian, my protector for the evening, and whispered to him.
"I don't have this many friends, Kian."
He didn't say a word and simply wrapped an arm around my waist. I hoped that was his way of reassuring me that everything would be okay. I tended to have a sense of foreboding when I entered heavily populated areas. The good thing, I guess, is that most of the attendants were vampires or werewolves. I let my guard down just a bit, but not too much. I plastered a smile on my face. It was my birthday, and I should be happy. Right?
Somebody had decorated the room with balloons and streamers. At first glance, it was all very human. What was missing? Ah, the food.
"Kian?" I whispered as we left a group of vampires and were going to greet more people. "Where is the food?" I had forgotten to eat since a certain domineering vampire had rushed me. He stopped walking and turned to me.
"It was best to have the food in the other room, Catherine. As you can plainly see, most of our guests do not eat," he replied in a hushed tone.
"Ah. I see. Okay, well, show me to said room so I can eat. I'm starving." He didn't say a word and just stood there. He nodded and then kissed my hand. Suddenly, one of his cronies manifested next to me.
