CHAPTER 10
The scent of bacon and eggs floated all around me as I woke. I looked at my clock; it was a little past ten. I was glad I could sleep in, but I was famished for skipping dinner last night. Wait – who was cooking?
I glanced over, shrugged on my robe, and tip-toed to my kitchen, listening to pots and pans banging about.
"She lives!" Liam said as he turned around to see me standing there with my hands on my hips.
James looked at me, a surprised look on his face as he took in my hair. It was probably a matted mess of curls and knots. My glare made him avert his eyes toward my Tweety Bird slippers, the corners of his mouth twitching.
Annoyed, I walked to my fridge and grabbed a Coke.
"Are you here to criticize my appearance, or do you have something important to tell me?" I was grumpy because I had expected to have a quiet day to myself to do some thinking.
"We were told to make sure you had breakfast. So here we are." Liam turned his attention back to his cooking.
I sighed. I never understood Kian's obsession with my eating habits.
I played with the pendant around my neck. The pattern beneath the light-colored gem moved in interesting patterns. I lifted it towards the light, wondering if I could make out what was causing the lines to move: they seemed to shift when I moved the pendant. It was a beautiful, yet odd, piece of jewelry.
Kian. There was so much I didn't know about him, so much I had wanted to learn, and so much I had been scared to know. Visions of last night invaded my thoughts. I could feel my cheeks warming. Then I was on fire.
"OH MY GOD! I'M ON FIRE!" I screamed. Green flames licked all over my body, yet it didn't hurt. Liam and James backed away from me. "OH MY GOD, HELP ME!" I screamed again, yet they just stood there and smiled.
"Um, Cat?"
"WHAT?! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M ON FIRE?!" Having to point out, yet again, that I was on fire. Warmth enveloped me; however, I wasn't burning. No pain. Odd.
"What were you thinking about before you burst into flames?" Liam asked, oh-so-calmly while I was still on fire.
I was embarrassed to say, 'having the best sex of my life with Kian,' but I didn't think it was wise to share that with them. I shouldn't have thought about him anyway since I had told him I never wanted to talk to him again. Still, it was impossible not to think about him. For better or worse, I didn't see my life without him in it. I was damned.
"Kian. Why?" Liam nodded when I answered.
"Okay. Stop thinking about him, and you should be okay."
"Why don't you sound so sure?" I asked, with green, fire-engulfed hands on my hips.
"Well, Kian told us how the pendant works, but we've never actually seen it firsthand. However, he did tell us it was pretty lethal to us, so we backed off."
"I see."
I was having a difficult time not thinking about Kian. I took a deep-calming breath. I focused on my slippers, but Kian gave those to me, so that didn't help. I thought about the happiest day of my life. Again, Kian.
"Yeah, this is so not happening right now," I muttered, unable to stop thinking about him. I felt like such an idiot.
"Are these flames gonna make my house catch on fire? Cuz I don't think they offered Kian-induced flames on the list of options on my insurance," I said dryly as I sat on one of the kitchen chairs.
