CHAPTER 12
When I woke, I thought of Kian. And, of course, I burst into flames. I can't believe I slept with that thing around my neck.
"Great, he'll be dead to the world for a few more hours while I lay here on fire," I said aloud.
"Take the pendant off," Kian muttered. He rolled over and put his arm around my waist.
"Kian?" I was surprised he was awake. Okay, barely awake, but awake, nonetheless.
"Shh, my love. I am trying to sleep."
"Why are you so grumpy? And why are you awake at this hour?" He lifted his head and opened one eye.
"I watched over you all night." He then plopped his head back down. "What time is it?" he asked into the pillow.
"It's ten." I was baffled that he was at least able to talk to me.
"I will need at least two more hours until I can function, my love." I smiled at him and kissed his cheek before I rolled out of bed.
"I'm still on fire," I whispered.
"Then take the pendant off," he grumbled again.
I took it off as he suggested. I stood beside the bed and watched him sleep for a few minutes before heading to the shower. I was giddy with emotions. And I felt surprisingly well for someone who was oh so very close to dying the night before.
After my shower, I went straight to the closet for some clothes. I had a feeling that I was gonna look like crap after last night regardless of how I felt. I was only tired and hungry, starving, actually. I put on a red, long-sleeved polo shirt and some jeans. I put my hair in a ponytail after I put on my socks and sneakers. After I looked in the mirror, I realized I didn't look as bad as I had expected. When I opened the front door, Liam handed me some sunglasses.
"What are these for?"
"Kian said you might need them. We also have orders to take you to eat and other stuff you might not want to do." I wasn't sure what he meant, but he did mention food, so I gave him a nod and took the sunglasses he offered me.
"Good, I'm starving."
We ended up on Kian's floor. They led me to his room and shortly wheeled in a cart full of food. Everything looked and smelled delicious. I fixed myself a plate and started eating. I finished that plate and fixed myself another. I was still hungry. I frowned and looked over at Liam and James sitting on the couch.
"Why am I not getting full? I'm still hungry." They didn't answer me and then played 'rock, paper, scissors.' Liam laughed.
"Why do I always lose?" James asked as he walked over to me.
"Cat, Kian wasn't sure how the ritual was gonna turn out..."
"Whaaat! What do you mean he wasn't sure?!" I was angry at Kian's inability to communicate and my stupidity for agreeing to something without knowing the side effects. I was close to losing it. How could such a perfect man be so annoying?
"Cat, it is crucial that you remain calm," Liam said slowly.
Anger and fear were doing their version of 'rock, paper, scissors' within me. Fear won. My hands began to tremble as I looked at the food and then to James, who had knelt before me. He offered his wrist to me. I closed my eyes, and my nose flared at the smell of his blood.
"Ahh!" I screamed at the most painful feeling in my mouth. I knew what it was. Fangs. This couldn't be! Kian has his heart back, and I get fangs! Freakin' curveballs!
