CHAPTER 6
The short ride in the elevator gave me enough time to clear my head a bit. However, the walk to Manami's room felt like it took forever. I was feeling anxious the closer we got to the door. I was unsure as to what to tell her about last night. I couldn't tell her that vampires and possibly werewolves were out to kill me. Not only was I unable to tell her the truth, but I also doubted she would believe me.
I let out another sigh, but it did nothing to calm my nerves. I didn't want to lie to my friend. Turing the knob, I heard her singing. I was confused as to why she would be in a cheerful singing mood.
"Cat!" she exclaimed as she ran to hug me. I smiled after our embrace. I was unsure as to what to say, so I let her talk after I apologized.
"Sorry the party was cut short, but I had some unexpected business to take care of downstairs," I said by way of explanation.
She jokingly punched my shoulder and laughed lightly.
"No biggie. Your friends took me to the club on the roof. We had a great time," She looked at my face closely, her eyes filled with worry. "You ok? You have a bump on your head."
I waved her comment away. I hadn't bothered to cover up my new bruise.
"Yeah, I'm a bit clumsy. Always have been." It was the truth, actually. I am a klutz. If something can go wrong, it will.
"Ah. Yeah, I remember that time I opened the door for you, but you walked right into the other door." She giggled.
I remember having so many laughs with her, even though most were at my expense. Everything was going okay. She didn't seem as though she was in danger. She had a fun time the night before. Slowly, I felt my muscles begin to relax, one at a time.
"Manami, how long are you staying in the States?" I was hoping to spend some more time with her before she left. It had been so long since we last spoke, had tea, and just simply hung out.
"I have to leave tomorrow, unfortunately. I must get back to work."
I made some quick calculations regarding the time I needed to take care of Detective Anderson's questions. I didn't include time to talk to Kian because I simply didn't want to talk to him for a while.
"Glad you don't have to leave today. I have to take care of some things, but I should be free tonight."
I was relieved to know that the bodyguards didn't insist on coming in. I found myself taking backward glances at the door, making sure Kian didn't intrude.
"Something wrong, Cat? You keep looking at the door." Didn't know I had been so obvious.
"Yeah, I thought I heard a noise outside." She nodded and walked over to the window seat.
"So, tell me more about Kian. How long have you been dating?" she asked. My eyes sorta bugged out of my face.
"Um, I'll take that as a 'we aren't dating' look," Manami said, amusement filling her eyes.
"Why would you even think we are?" I had to ask. I didn't think I had displayed any signs of feelings for him.
"Well, I don't know. You just seemed very much the couple to me. The look of adoration on his face is unmistakable. You seemed really happy with him, very relaxed. You're normally not like that with guys, y'know?"
Of course, her reasoning was logical and to the point. Yes, I was a screw-up with relationships; no need to rub it in.
"Yes, well, I am not reciprocating his feelings," I said with a pout.
