"See Muffin, aren't you happy I took that pic?" Isa teases, nudging my shoulder gently as I chew my strawberry cream cheese bagel and look at the most recent like on a photo Isa secretly took when I was trying on the jeans I never bought.

"No" I scoff, mouth half full of chew bagel, "because soon I'll get an 'hey u up?' Text from Winnie resulting in an hour long FaceTime and pinning".

"Eh" Piper bobs her head from side to side.

Today's the first day of the school year and the three of us are walking to the auditorium for our annual first day of school morning assembly.

Ava's off with friends and Adam's trailing anxiously behind us, looking worried and tugging at the hem of his navy blue sweater that sits over his white collared shirt.

I throw my phone inside my official SVA cheer jacket from last year's pocket and then snack my friend hand behind me hopefully for Adam to see.

By the way his hand falls into mine, I realize he sees it, and he grasps it tightly.

"Just admit I'm right" Isa grins proudly.

"And boost that ego?" Amy chimes in with a snort that makes Isa's face fall, "no thanks".

"You're no fun Walker" Isa pokes at Amy's side.

"No" Amy rolls her eyes, "I just want you to put that pretty mouth to good use-"

"Guys ew, stop!" Piper quickly covers her ears.

"Yeah, there's a child here!" I chuckle.

"Like he cares" Amy takes one last bite of her blueberry muffin before reaching her hand back and handing it to Adam, he nod a thank you and she smiles before going to fish a pack of gum out her purse.

"True..." I trail off, "hey Buddy, you know this won't completely suck, right?" I reassure him.

"You're doing it wrong" Isa shakes her head, and turns to face Adam, "look little dude, anyone mess with you we'll rip their faces off, okay?"

Not reassuring at all. I can feel him cowering.

"Yeah, not much help" I smile, my grip on his hand tightens a little in gentle care.

"Worth a try" the black haired girl shrugs.

We enter the loud auditorium which makes Adam quiver a little in fear.

I've always been a little shy in new settings- around people, but seeing him like this- makes me thankful that I can at least fake my confidence and hide my lack there of behind dark humor jokes and a toothy grin people call "cute".

While Adam has the whole nine yards, unlike Ava, he's too scared to even try to use it.

I fear for his high school experience but realize one day I have to let him go... literally.

Isa finds seats in the middle- behind a group of eager newbies and Freshman girls talking to Ava and complimenting her on her newly did now pink tipped acrylic nails.
