"The only thing I wanna do
Is make it up to you"
Betty- Taylor Swift
That day, no one wanted to go for a walk, except Charlie and Margaret, so they went together. There was a beautiful trail along the coast, challenging but the two friends were ready to face it. They wore the necessary attire and brought just enough food and water, along with some emergency supplies.
They set off on the designated path, their friends watching them leave with mischievous smiles, as it was obviously part of their plans.
They took a break after an hour by a cliff. Margaret took her water bottle and drank deeply while Charlie went to admire the view.
"Why don't people all live here?" wondered Charlie.
"We're too far from the city," explained Margaret.
"But it's so beautiful!"
"Because it's far from the city."
He shrugged and admitted that made sense. He continued to admire the view when he suddenly felt the ground tremble. He looked down and saw the earth crumbling beneath his feet. Margaret, seeing this, widened her eyes and rushed towards him while he ran in vain to reach a safe spot. He almost grabbed Margaret's hand, but just as their fingers were about to touch, he fell and could only hold on to the edge of the cliff.
Charlie looked behind him and saw the void promising certain death in the ocean. Margaret leaned towards him, trying to calm herself as best she could. Charlie's hand was too far; she couldn't reach it.
"Charlie, extend your hand!"
He reached out to her, but they were not close enough. Margaret looked around and saw a long tree branch. She crossed her fingers, took it, and handed it to Charlie. He grabbed it, and Margaret tried to pull him with all the strength she had, and Charlie began to regain hope. He tried to help as much as he could, and finally, he was saved. He lay on the ground and closed his eyes; he had just seen death pass before his eyes for a fraction of a second.
Margaret approached him and moved him away from the edge in case it collapsed further. She took his hand and noticed it was injured, blood flowing down Charlie's wrist, but he didn't complain, as if he hadn't noticed.
"Charlie...your wrist..."
He looked at his wrist and nearly fainted upon seeing its state. Margaret placed her hand over his eyes and told him to wait. She fetched bandages from her bag and tried her best to wrap them around his wrist.
As she treated him, Charlie couldn't help but watch her at work. She seemed so focused, serious, and especially... incredibly beautiful. He loved the way her eyes shone in the light, the curve of her lips, and the shape of her face.
"You are... even more beautiful than the day I lost you," said Charlie.
"What are you saying?"
She hadn't heard Charlie's words. He just smiled and replied:
"Nothing."
Once they had calmed down, they laughed heartily, happy to be alive.
"Incredible, I almost died today!" said Charlie with a smile.
"How can you say that while smiling?" asked Margaret, trying to hold back a laugh.
"I'm not."
And they continued their walk. Margaret held Charlie's hand, pretending to be worried about his condition, but in reality, she just wanted to hold his hand. They eventually arrived at their destination at sunset. The sun reflected on the sea, and Charlie couldn't help but say with a hint of humor:
"It's very romantic."
"Oh, shut up, Dalton."
"No, seriously, let's imagine I was someone else. You'd seal the deal quickly here!"
"Let's say the view would help."
Charlie smiled and moved closer to the young woman, still joking:
"Honestly, I'd like to see your new flirting techniques because the old ones... are questionable."
Margaret looked at him, shocked and slightly offended. She put her hands on her hips and stood in front of him, trying to be as threatening as possible.
"Those techniques worked well on you."
"No, it's mine that worked on you, it's not the same thing."
"Sure, keep reassuring yourself."
He laughed and pulled her closer. She looked away, but he placed a hand on her cheek.
"For real, if I were a handsome, sexy, funny, and intelligent man, which I am by the way, but let's move on... what would you do?"
"I would ask you to kiss me, and you would do it, nothing simpler."
Charlie smiled and approached Margaret dangerously. Her gaze shifted to his lips, and she blushed slightly, wondering if he was really going to do it. He didn't stop; he kept getting closer while occasionally looking into Margaret's eyes to see what she was thinking, but she couldn't even think at that moment. So many things were running through her mind, but she didn't know what to do until a flash of lucidity crossed her mind.
"If you kiss me, I'll hit you," she said, laughing.
"I figured."
He laughed and moved away from her, but he didn't see the disappointment that flashed in Margaret's eyes for a split second.
They returned to Knox's place in the evening. Margaret went to take a shower while Charlie and Knox shared a beer and talked about their day.
"Charlie, can we talk seriously for a few minutes?" asked Knox.
"That's a pretty difficult task you're asking of me, Overstreet."
"Do you accept?"
"Of course."
Knox looked around to make sure no one was watching them.
"You and Margaret..."
"Me and Margaret?"
"Are you planning to get back together?"
"What? No!"
"Alright, I expected that reaction. Now I'm going to grill you."
Charlie sighed and mentally prepared for Knox's questions.
"The fact is, it would be a shame to wait another 11 years for you to admit your feelings," explained Knox.
"We've moved on."
"Really? Because I feel like nothing has changed. You still devour her with your eyes every time she enters the room."
"That's absolutely not true."
It was at that moment that Margaret came out of the shower and crossed the room quickly without noticing that Charlie was watching her with interest.
"Are you kidding me, Dalton?"
"I can't help it if she's pretty!"
"Good grief, man... Carpe Diem! Seize your chance with her."
"I would hurt her, she deserves better."
He didn't even let Knox contradict him and left the room.
