Swap Meat

The next day, I was walking down the street with Sam, pushing the twins in front of me. Evie hung off of my arm, humming under her breath, which was a habit she learned from Si. Any moment there was a beat of silence or she got lost in thought, she hummed. Now Evie hummed.

"So, uh, where are we going anyway?" Sam asked.

"To work. The case?" I said.

"Oh, right, yeah. The case. Of course." Sam nodded his head. "So, uh, where do you wanna start?"

"Well, since you couldn't find where Maggie Briggs was buried now we have to do an all day tombstone roll, see if we can dig her up." I stated.

"Which should be fun." Millie remarked.

"Wait, Maggie Briggs? You mean, like the witch, Maggie Briggs?" Sam asked as we reached the car.

I pulled open the back door. Lady jumped in first, growling softly at Sam.  "Yeah, Sherlock." I answered, buckling Wyatt in first. He looked up at me, babbling. His first birthday just passed. I smiled at him. "That's my little man."

"Yeah, she's in the basement." Sam stated.

I stood. "Come again? What--? What basement?" I lifted Aurora into my arms. "Hey, honey." I smiled as she stared up at me with Si's eyes.

"Isaiah Pickett's house." Sam told me. "Okay, there's this legend that he hung her, but he didn't."

"Ooh, the lore was wrong." Millie sang.

"Stupid lore." Evie remarked, shaking her head.

"The real truth is that she was carrying his illegitimate child and he killed her, and then buried her in the basement." Sam continued.

"The murdered child." I realized, standing up again and reaching for Eli. "That explains the scratches. How do you know this?"

"Oh, I've done all kinds of research on it." Sam waved it off. I gave him a questioning look. "I mean, you know, last night."

"Yeah. Nice work, I guess." I complimented, buckling Eli in before getting in the car myself.

Evie settled beside me, leaning forward as the radio cut on with the engine.

"Oh, man, turn it up." Sam said.

Evie's hand reached for the dial but she couldn't make it.

"Seriously?" I asked as Bob Segar's Rock 'n Roll Never Forgets played through the speakers.

"Hell yeah."

"Are you ill?" Millie asked Sam.

"Uh, no." Sam answered.

I turned the radio up, making Evie clap her hands.

Sam followed me down the stairs and into the basement of Donna's house. We walked around a shelf to the other side of the room.

"Boo-yah!" Sam exclaimed, jumping out from behind the shelf. "Master Chief is in the house, biz-atches."

"Remind me again how you convinced Millie to sleep with you?" I asked.

"I slept with Millie?"

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah, fine." Sam said. "When did I sleep with her?"

"Uh, two months ago?" I said, turning and continuing to the other side of the room. A part of the dirt floor was covered in greenery. "Well, I'll be damned. Willow moss."
