"He never made sense
but neither does love."

Would Serena have made the same decisions if she had known how the night would end?

The corridors she travelled alongside Edmund were dark and silent. She had never had any direct ideas about the Ministry, but it would never have been deserted. But it would probably have been too conspicuous to march through the main entrance with her anyway and would have caused more of a stir than necessary. Serena tried to focus on the two billowing cloaks in front of her and less on what was bothering her at the moment and the dull feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"It's a wonder it worked out so quickly," she whispered to the Slytherin on her left and witnessed his face stiffen into a mask at the same moment. Apparently he was rather less happy that his father wanted to help her and merely snorted contemptuously, "Well, if your name is Elijah Hall..."

"There's hardly anything a few Galleons can't fix," Serena finished his sentence and sighed.

"Not money." Edmund was silent for a moment and lowered his voice once more. "Relationships that money buys."

She nodded and noticed how Edmund suddenly slowed his steps and walked a little behind her. The Gryffindor turned to him in surprise and gave him a questioning look, which he answered with a forward motion of his head. She should keep walking while he walked behind her. But she couldn't think about how strange his behaviour was again, because she could now clearly hear voices that were demanding her full attention.

Her heartbeat quickened, as did her steps. She would see her father again in a moment. She would get him out of there, for sure, she could do it. Somehow.

The babble of voices grew and became louder and louder. More and more voices seemed to join. Known and unknown. Serena stopped almost abruptly, not daring to turn round in the hope that she had made a mistake. "Was that Harry?"

As soon as she had asked the question, she could feel someone turn her arms behind her back, hold them tightly and cover her mouth with one hand before she could make another sound. Instinctively, she struggled to free herself from the tight grip and tried in vain to kick the traitor's leg, but only met with a yawning void. She didn't know what that was about. Couldn't and wouldn't understand what had just happened.

With a satisfied smile, Elijah Hall had turned to face them and Serena wondered how she could ever trust this man, or rather this family, because the deceitfulness was almost so obvious on their faces. "Well done, Edmund."

Serena clenched her jaw so hard she could taste blood and still squirmed to get out of his clutches, but of course Edmund had always been stronger than her and without her wand resting in her trouser pocket, she could do little. What would they do with her now? Hand her over to the Ministry? But there were still the voices that she couldn't get out of her head. What were her friends doing here?
