„There are two tragedies in life.
One is to lose your heart's desire.
The other is to gain it."It seemed like this was the first time in weeks that Serena had been seen without a book in one hand and her notes in the other. The OWLs had come faster than they had all liked after the events at the Ministry. But perhaps this distraction to the coming evil had been necessary to remind themselves that they were still just sixteen-year-old students.
The calm before the storm felt good. Lying on the grass surrounded by her friends and enjoying the first rays of summer sunshine made Serena feel like nothing was impossible.
"Why can't every day look like this?" Hailey asked contentedly, stretching her face skywards, her straight brown hair almost touching the grass behind her.
"As of today, it can," Serena grinned, unable to recall the times she had wished for this exact moment. Many days she had sat with Hermione, Harry and Ron in the common room or with Hailey and Astoria in the library late into the night behind stacks of books so high that none of them could see over them. The dark circles under her eyes contrasted with her pale skin, but the sleeplessness would finally come to an end.
She still remembered the numerous heads in front of her, bent tensely over the exam, shimmering maroon, copper and gold in the sunlight that flooded the Great Hall. Transfiguration had been Serena's last and favourite test. With her thumbs up, she had turned to Hermione, who had been sitting directly behind her and she too had worn a satisfied smile on her lips, which still hadn't gone out. At least until this moment.
"Of course it's not about what you know," Malfoy mocked loudly as he strutted past them with Crabbe and Goyle, but not without giving each of them a nasty look, "It's about who you know. So my father has been friends with the head of the examination board for years. Griselda Marchbanks even had dinner with us several times."
"Do you think that's true?" Hermione asked, startled, after the Slytherin had already disappeared again and looked at her in panic.
"If it is, there's nothing we can do about it anyway," Ron replied sombrely, before grinning again. "Though I doubt it will do Malfoy much good after recent events."
"I don't think that's true," Neville interjected quietly. "Griselda Marchbanks is a friend of my gran's and she never mentioned the Malfoys."
"And what's she like?" Hermione wanted to know promptly and moved a little closer to the clumsy boy so that she wouldn't miss any important information. "Is she strict?"
"A bit like Gran, basically," he muttered, a little surprised to suddenly be in the spotlight of his friends and shifted a little uncomfortably in the grass.
