Minji's POV:
10th of the 3rd month of the year, March. The happiest day of my life, actually the second happiest-well, I'm not sure if I should consider the day I met Hanni the happiest or today?
I think today fits the description the best, the day Hanni becomes truly mine, and I become hers for eternity. I couldn't be happier that twenty-one-year-old me decided to propose on a beach when it was only us two. I'm glad I didn't act like a coward and asked Hanni if she was willing to be stuck with me for the rest of her life. Hanni gave me the reaction I would never forget, screaming yes as she cried in my arms, telling me how grateful she was and how much she loved me. I wouldn't change it for anything.
"I need you to button this damn dress up, Haerin. I'm not going to be late to my own wedding," I said to Haerin, who had just come back from making out with her girlfriend. She had been acting lazy the entire day-partially the reason we were going to be late to the ceremony.
"Alright, okay, okay," Haerin said as she helped me button my wedding dress. Hanni and I were both wearing white wedding dresses that took us months to decide upon, and I'm happy with our choices.
"I'm so nervous," I said to Haerin, who seemed bothered. I have been saying this for the entire day, and it was true-I was scared to death, and I had no idea why.
"Calm down, Minji. You're not getting married to a stranger; it's just Hanni," she said. "You'll be fine."
"Yeah, you're right, I'll be fine," I said, mostly to myself. I took one last look in the mirror before Haerin helped me gather my dress and stand up from the chair. I wiped my sweaty palms on Haerin's shoulder as she gave me a disgusted look.
"Minji, honey, are you ready?" Mom opened the door and came in. I gave her a nod, and she smiled before kissing me on the forehead.
"I can't keep up with the times I've cried today," she said. "You've grown up."
"Yes, Mom, I've grown up," I said.
"Now if you guys excuse me, I'm the bridesmaid. I have to be out early," Haerin said, rushing out the door.
"You ready to go, kid?" Dad came in with a smile on his face. By Dad, I mean Ben. He and Mom got married two years ago, and I couldn't be happier. He's not my stepdad; he's the dad who stepped up.
My biological father came around a few times, apologizing to my mother, but she did the best thing, which was to refuse. I heard that he got arrested for scamming and his business was shattered. He didn't even get to experience his biological daughter's wedding. I don't want to care, not after what he made us go through, but there's a part of me that's disappointed.
Dad reached out a hand for me to grab, and we walked outside the dressing room to the main hall. I linked my arm with his, and we started walking to the altar as slow music played. The smile on my face hurt my cheeks. The few family and friends clapped around, and we stopped when we reached the altar. There were bridesmaids on either side of the stage. Haerin, my roommate who I became friends with over the college years; Karina, my cousin who I barely got to meet but had a strong bond with; and Minju were on my side. On Hanni's side stood Hyein, Yunjin, and of course Danielle.
Dad left me at the altar and stepped away from the stage as the doors opened, just like they did for me. Hanni's father walked in with his arm linked with my soon-to-be wife, Hanni.
Hanni's makeup was light, her shoulderless dress beautifully spread out, a bouquet of lilies and roses in her hand with a smile that adorned her face. She looked too beautiful to be real, too beautiful to be mine. I think someone is crying. I think it's me.
Hanni's father took her hand and gave it to me. Her grip tightened around my hand as she joined me on the stage. Hanni leaned close to my ear.
"You're crying. Please don't, because then I'll start crying too and ruin the makeup my stylist spent hours on," Hanni said, her voice cracking between words. I looked at her to see tears welling up in her eyes.
"You look beautiful," I said.
"No, you look beautiful," she whispered back, raising her hand to use her thumb to wipe away my tears.
It was time for vows, and truthfully, I spent hours last night saying this to myself in the mirror at 3 a.m. I even woke Hanni up from her sleep, and she was really annoyed. Glad to see she isn't anymore.
"Since the first time I saw you, Hanni, I've felt this strange connection. We were still young, and you made sure to make it obvious how much you despised my existence," I said, making the crowd along with Hanni laugh.
"We got over that bickering phase in our friendship, and it turned into something bigger. I've loved you ever since that day, ever since we kissed by the river. I love all the little moments with you. I love when you-" The tears interrupted me. I looked up from the page I'd written my vows on to see Hanni letting her tears fall.
"I love when you make me feel like the happiest person in the world, if I already wasn't. I love your midnight talks and when you sing me to sleep. I love that every day you give me a reason to wake up each morning. I want to promise you a happy future, but I'm afraid that wouldn't be possible," I continued.
"But I promise you that I'll be by your side, through the happy and the rough times. I'll support you in anything and everything. I vow that we'll be a family forever, and I vow that I'll laugh at your jokes even if they're not funny. I vow that I'll always be there for you, always loving you.
"I love you," I said. The room erupted in claps, Hanni's face red from crying. I smiled and gave her an assuring nod. Hanni wiped her tears and started her vows.
"Minji, I promise to be your best friend and your soulmate for the rest of our lives. I vow that I'll stay true to you. I vow to be your safe place forever and to be the one you'll come to when you're in need. I've loved you for so many years, and I promise you," Hanni took a breath, tears again started to fall from her eyes and down her cheeks,
"that I'll be with you till death do us part. I promise to cherish you and love you even on days when you accidentally burn our dinner," the audience laughed again,
"and I hope you're willing to let me stay by your side as we move to this new part of our lives and explore what we know not. I vow to be your partner forever," Hanni stopped, smiling at the paper before continuing,
"and remember you teased me in high school? I'll admit it here, I find your awkwardness charming, Min, and I don't think you're insufferable," Hanni said.
With that, I put my hand behind her neck and pulled her in for a deep kiss, our first one as a married couple. I could taste Hanni's tears as I pulled her closer, closing the little distance left between us.
We pulled away from the kiss to catch our breaths, and I didn't even realize that people were clapping. I leaned in again to peck her lips one more time.
"We're married," Hanni whispered with a smile.
THE END.
