Wonwoo

I was pretty sure my cheeks would be flaming red with shame if I wasn't so pale right now. I was sick to my stomach and the harsh look Mingyu was giving me wasn't helping.

I briefly considered going back into the bedroom until the plane landed, but I was no coward. I'd had a hand in this fiasco, and even if my family wouldn't own up to what they had done, I would.

I sat down in the chair closest to the bedroom door at about the same time the flight attendant walked in with a tray with two cups of something steaming hot.

Mingyu thanked her before taking the tray and setting it down on the nearest table. After the flight attendant walked away, Mingyu motioned to the tray. "Coffee?"

I snorted out a nervous laugh as I got to my feet. "Last time I accepted coffee from someone, I ended up married to my brother's fiancé."

Mingyu paused for a moment and then reached for one of the cups. "Okay, while I can see that that might be an issue, I can promise you that I put nothing in your coffee. Unless the flight attendant has nefarious plans for us, your coffee should be good to go."

Mingyu grabbed his own cup and then walked over to sit in the chair across from me. When I sat back down—coffee in hand—he seemed to regard me for the longest time. There was a small pucker between his eyebrows, but other than that, he had no expression on his face.

"Can I ask you some questions?" Mingyu started.

"Of course."

"You work for Jakue D'Amato, correct?"

"Yes, but how did you know that?" I hadn't talked about my life at all. It wasn't that I didn't want to. There just hadn't been time.

"Jake and Jungkook are my best friends. Jungkook's husband, Beomgyu, is my baby brother. Jungkook mentioned to me that you worked together when I told him your name."

"Oh, god." I pressed my hand to my chest, unable to breathe. "Am I going to lose my job?"

My job was pretty much the one good thing I had in my life. I didn't know what I'd do if I didn't have it anymore. And it wasn't just the job. I loved the people I worked with. They understood me and how my mind worked. They not only understood me, but they encouraged and supported me.

"No!" Mingyu snapped out sharply, but then he lowered his tone. "No, Wonwoo, your job is safe. I swear. I was just trying to clarify if you were the same Jeon Wonwoo that worked for Jake."

"Yes, I am. I work in one of his labs as a bio engineer."

"I'm not sure exactly what a bio engineer does."

I wasn't surprised. Not many people did. "Bio engineering is the application of the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to create stuff. Basically, we attempt to either mimic biological systems to create products, or to modify and control biological systems."

Mingyu's eyebrows lifted. "Huh?"

"If I had my laptop, I could show you, but I'm not even sure where it is. The last time I saw it, it was in my rental car with my suitcase."

"Oh, I had everything in the rental car put in the cargo bay before we left the airport. Jungkook was supposed to return the car to the rental agency today."

I brightened. "Really?"

If I lost my laptop, years of notes and research could be lost. I had everything backed up on a cloud, but I often worked on ideas that came to mind and made notes, and I was notorious for forgetting to back them up.
