"Well, this should be interesting."
I glanced at Jake as he hung up his phone. "What?"
He nodded toward his phone. "That was security in the lobby. It seems one of Borelli's men is here to speak to me."
"What?" Mingyu snapped. "Are you serious?"
Jake's eyes widened. "Oh, yes."
"Why would Borelli be sending someone here to talk to you?" Mingyu asked.
"I don't know, but I guess we're about to find out." Jake nodded to the two chairs by the window. "Why don't you two go sit over there?"
We quickly got up and moved. I had no desire to sit next to a mobster or even a mobster's thug. But a thug was not who walked through the door a few minutes later. This guy was dressed in a much nicer suit than Jake's. His hair was combed back in an artful style and his beard neatly trimmed.
He lifted an eyebrow when he stepped into the office and saw all the muscle we had. Fred stood with Jake and Jai, Kato stood next to me and Mingyu, and two other guards stood right inside the door.
"Good afternoon," he said as he casually strolled over to stand in front of Jake's desk. I had to give it to the man, he was very self-confident. He didn't seem bothered by all the extra security at all. "I'm Vinnie Borelli. I'm here on behalf of my grandfather, Carlos Borelli."
Jake's eyebrows lifted. "Your grandfather?"
"Yes."
Jake stared for one very long, very intense moment and then gestured to one of the chairs we had just been sitting in. "Please, have a seat, Mr. Borelli, and let me know why you are here."
"Thank you."
He was polite.
Once Vinnie had sat down, he crossed one leg over the other and then folded his hands together and rested them in his lap in clear view of everyone. I got the feeling he'd played this game before.
"My grandfather asked me to come to see you concerning the agreement you have with him."
"I won't end the agreement."
"No, no, that's not what this is about. He wanted me to impress upon you that he has not broken that agreement, which is why he has sent me in his stead, but some things have come to light that he felt might violate your agreement and he wanted me to assure you that he had no part in it."
Jake's eyes narrowed. "What things?"
Vinnie's eyes darted over to me, making me wish I had an entire body made of a bulletproof vest and not just the vest.
"My understanding was that someone attacked Mr. Jeon earlier today."
"Kim," I said before I could stop myself. "My last name is now Kim."
"My apologies, Mr. Kim." He nodded toward me before turning his attention back to Jake. "My grandfather wanted me to assure you that the... uh... gentleman that attacked Mr. Kim earlier today was not sent by him. He also wanted me to let you know that this man has been dealt with."
"Killed?" I asked.
Vinnie smirked as he glanced at me. "No, killing him would not teach him a lesson about accepting work in someone else's territory without permission. He was merely persuaded to seek another line of work."
I didn't want to know.
"How did you catch the guy so fast?" I asked. "This only happened a couple of hours ago."
