I held up a finger when Jungkook walked into my new law office and then quickly ended my phone call. I pretty much had all the information I needed about how the investigation into Wonwoo's parents was going anyway.
I didn't want to dwell on it.
It had been two months since that fiasco in the lobby of our apartment building. A lot had happened and I was ready for it all to be over.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Do you remember a frat brother named Maxwell Prescott?"
I frowned as I glanced up at Jungkook. "You mean Scotty?"
That was the only Prescott I knew.
Jungkook nodded as he sat down in the chair across from my desk. "He left me a message on my office phone this morning. He needs to speak with a lawyer and asked for a frat favor."
"Why?"
"I don't know yet. He didn't give me any specifics. Just asked if he could speak to me."
"Didn't he drop out in our junior year and go home?" My brow furrowed as I searched my memories. "His dad had a stroke or something, right?"
"Yeah, he had to go home and take over the family business."
"Huh."
"I talked to Jake about it, and he said since it was a frat favor, to go ahead and talk with Scotty and see what he needs, but it's weird having him contact us after all of this time. I haven't heard from him in years. He didn't even attend the ten-year reunion last year."
"Wonder what he wants."
Jungkook shrugged as he sat in the chair across the desk from me. "I guess we'll find out when he calls." He sighed. "So, what's new in your world?"
"Oh, I just got off the phone with that detective investigating Wonwoo's parents."
"Detective Waterston?"
"You know him?"
Jungkook snorted. "He was the detective in charge of the investigation when Hana and Yoona tried to pull their shit with Beomgyu. He's a pretty good detective. Seems to be able to see through the bullshit."
"I hope so."
"So, what did he say? Is Jeon going to do any time?"
"Yes, but not as much as I would have liked." I would have preferred he spend the rest of his life behind bars. "They are going to shave some time off on his sentence because he's giving them information on the mob guys that he took the loan out from."
"He shot a cop. I mean, granted, the guy didn't die and he'll make a full recovery, but he still shot a cop. Not to mention his own wife. That should get him a few decades behind bars at the very least."
I shrugged. "I guess they want the mobsters more."
Jungkook's eyes narrowed. "They are going after the guys that forced Jeon to launder their money?"
"Looks that way." I wasn't sure how laundering money had anything to do with Jeon hiring a hitman to kill his own kid, but apparently, the police thought there was a case there. They seemed more interested in his connections to the mob than anything else.
Pissed me off.
"What about his mom?" Jungkook asked.
"She's still recovering in the hospital. The doctors said she'll be there for another couple of weeks. When Jeon shot her, the bullet hit her in the chest, which is why she's been in the hospital for so long. It's taking a long time for her to recover. I think part of it is her finally realizing that she's lost everything. Her sons want nothing to do with her and her husband is headed to jail."
"What about once she is released? What then?"
I shrugged. "I guess she'll go back to California. I've already filed for a restraining order against her for Wonwoo and Wooshik. They want nothing to do with her and I don't want them around her."
Jungkook leaned forward, his eyebrows raised. "They aren't going to charge her with anything?"
"Except for her trespassing, there's no evidence that she did anything else. We all know she's just as nuts as her husband, but being crazy isn't grounds for charging her."
"I guess."
"Not to worry," I said, "Jake is helping me make sure that she never bothers Wonwoo or Wooshik again."
Jungkook grinned. "Do tell."
"He loaned my father the money to buy up Jeon's company. Jake is going to be a silent partner in the company while my dad gets it brought into the current century. Once he starts making money, my father will buy Jake out."
"The sale of the company should give Mrs. Jeon enough money to live the rest of her life as long as she doesn't try to continue that lavish lifestyle of hers."
I snorted. "Yeah, I don't see that happening." Her entire world revolved around her lavish life. I didn't see her giving that up without a fight. "As long as she stays away from Wonwoo, I don't care what happens to her."
"How is Wonwoo holding up?"
"Better than I expected under the circumstances. He's already had three years without his parents in his life so he's kind of used to it. It's Wooshik I'm worried about."
"Why?"
"He was always their golden boy, but it came with a lot of strings. Not only is he suddenly out from under their thumb, but he's not in the limelight anymore either. Wonwoo seems to think he'll be okay, but I'm a little worried about the kind of drama he'll create to get all of that attention on him again."
"I'd say you have a right to be worried after everything he pulled."
"Well, he's currently living in Wonwoo's old apartment and Jake gave him a job, so we'll see how he does. At the first sign of drama, I'm kicking him out on his ass."
"How will Wonwoo feel about that?" Jungkook asked. "Will it cause problems with him?"
"Are you serious? Wonwoo was the one who threatened Wooshik and ordered him to mind his manners. He said he's more than willing to help his brother out, but if Wooshik fucks with the life we're building, he's on his own."
Jungkook chuckled. "That's the way it should be."
I grinned as I thought of my handsome husband. "Yeah."
I had it good, and I knew it.
I glanced toward the door when it swung open, tensing. "Wonwoo?"
"I did it!" He shouted, bouncing on his heels. When I stood up, he raced around the desk and threw himself into my arms. "I did it, Mingyu, I did it!"
"Uh, did what, babe?"
"I figured out the formula for the polymer. I tested it and it works."
My eyes rounded. "The one you were trying to create for veterans?"
"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Wonwoo sang out as he danced in circles. "Once I file the patent, Jake says he'll get me in touch with one of his friends at Veteran's Affairs and we can start working on a prototype for the prosthetics."
"That's great news, Wonwoo." When he bounced closer, I caught him and dragged him into my arms. I smiled down at him. "You're so smart and now everyone will know it. You're going to give so many people a chance at a better life."
Wonwoo smiled as he leaned into me and batted his eyes at me. "Can we go home and celebrate?"
I grinned down at the man. "I think I can arrange that."
I'd be willing to do anything for the man I married.
