Cara

"Cara, you're a very bright student. Your writing is quite exceptionally magnificent. If I may ask, what do you plan on doing with your future?" Mrs. Carla asks.

"In fact, I plan to be a journalist and author, well I hope to." I smile. I feel giddy, It makes me feel good when people say things like that.

"I see the passion in your eyes and your writing. You would be superb in the journalism world." She says.

"You don't understand how much this means to me, just you saying that." It means more than she knows.

Mrs. Carla is my journalism teacher, the best there is. She's my favorite of all times. If I ever need to talk about anything, she's there. For my writing, mostly, there's never a time where she isn't supportive. I go to her for revision of my book I'm writing, Falling, is what it's called.

It's an enemies to lovers book. Kylie and Jace are the main characters. Lots of tension and angst, to sweet and beautiful. I haven't let too many people read it yet. Only Emma and Mrs. Carla.

Emma is already sprinting to the trampoline in our back yard. I have Cam and Laney holding my hands as I lead them out.

"Jump!" Cam yells and runs to the trampoline. Emma picks him up. Her long blond hair falls over the both of them causing Cam to giggle.

Laney laughs and makes grabby hands to me. I pick her up and lift her in the air. I spin her and place her on the trampoline, climbing on after.

"Just like when we were kids, huh?" Emma says nudging me as she almost falls and dragging me down with her.

"Just like childhood." I feel a wave of sadness run through me. I miss being a little when I didn't always worry about not being good enough.

I jump back when I feel something it my leg. My jaw drops and I bust out laughing when I see that Cam has thrown his bouncy ball at me.

"You little brat!" I grab him and he giggles. I squeeze him into a soft little hug and he wraps his arms around my shoulders.

"You get no ice cream tonight." I tell him and he pouts. He gives me those puppy dog eyes I can't resist. I sigh jokingly.

"Please sissy! I want ice cream!" He whines and giggles when I tickle his sides. He squirms in my arms and smiles so big.

"Fine you can get ice cream." I tell him then I feel Laney on my back. Emma helped her climb onto me. I've never heard Laney giggle so much.

"Emma! Laney!" I giggle and almost topple over. "Get her off before we fall." I feel her being pulled off of me. I grab her and tickle Laney next.

"No, Cara, Stop it!" She giggles and keeps trying to crawl away. Emma is laughing hysterically. She really enjoys helping them torture me. But I don't mind.

I hear a voice from behind me, I'd know that smooth British accent anywhere. Jack. "What book are you reading?"

"Letters to the lost by Bridget Kemmerer." I say and close the front cover so he can see it. He glances at it then back at me.

"What's it about?" That soft British accent sending chills down my spine. I literally shiver.

"You really want to know?" I raise an eyebrow. Skeptically I gesture to the seat next to me for him to sit.

"I want to know everything about you, I mean— I want to know everything about the book. Yes, the book."

He looks away. I bite back a smile. "I'm sorry, what was that first part? You want to know everything about...me?"

"I—uh." He stutters and it's the cutest thing I have ever heard. Especially since he's so— him. If that makes sense.

"Oh, I'm just messing with you." I say. He lets out a low nervous laugh. Goosebumps slowly creep up my arm. Why is this happening to me? All he did was laugh, then goosebumps!

"So, the book?" He clears his throat and looks at it. He doesn't look at me again. He looks at the cover, focused, maybe too focused.

He has a hint of an incandescent look as he lays his eyes upon me. It makes me feel special, I don't why. He looks at me like I'm important, like I matter, as if I'm worth something.

"Promise you won't make fun but it's a romance. I read romance, a lot. It's my favorite genre, I just love— love."

"I would never, ever make fun of something you love. That's a promise." He says and I suck in a breath slightly.

I'm struck by the look of adoration in his eyes. Why do I want do want to kiss him? Oh. I want to kiss Jack Harris. What's going on here?

"So we have Juliet Young and Declan Murphy. Two struggling teens dealing with despair and grief. Finding one another over letter, but the twist is they don't know who they are writing to. Aliases, Cemetery Girl and The Dark. Slowly developing a strong connection, they begin to have the most intimate conversations. They talk about things that they would never speak to others about. Slowly falling for one another."

"That sounds wonderful." Oh, kiss me now. What the actual what am I thinking? I hardly know him. But it would be nice to kiss him. Kissing him would be earth shattering. Cara, stop!

"Exactly why I love it." I flush slightly and I can see him looking at me from the corner of my eyes.

"I can tell. That you really love it." He says and I turn to look at him finally. How am I so stupid?

"How so?" I tilt my head slightly and his eyes widen just slightly. What did I do? Is there something on my face?

"Your eyes illuminate with admiration and warmth." Oh. He noticed that? I never thought someone could notice something like that about me. What is going on here? What is it about him? There's something I can't reach, why is he noticing me? Why does he treat me like I matter? I don't. So why is he?

What am I supposed to say to that? No one has ever noticed or said anything like that about me. I'm completely caught off guard.

After a moment of silence Jack asks, "Why don't you eat lunch with me, if you'd like?"

"I would love to!" Could you sound any more desperate, Cara, dang? I want to sit with him.

What happens in that mind of his? I want to know his past. What he feels and thinks. I want to know what he's good at, weaknesses and strengths.
