Violet was starting to go back to her normal self, contained, harsh and angry 99% of the time. I noticed since dinner, the exchange up to now in the car. Something was occupying her mind, maybe I should find out what it was? I was her husband, I mean it was my obligation anyway.
"Something wrong Vee?" I asked as we drove back home. She faced me and scoffed at my question as if I was supposed to know what it was.
"You know, while I was at the exchange memories of that night started flashing upon my eyes" she answered and narrowed her eyes. My grip on the wheel tightened and I kept my eyes on the road.
"How could you omit the fact that you almost shot a person for touching me? Actually, the question I really want you to answer is why" her voice was steady and serious.
"You are my wife, it's only right" it was a lie. I wanted to tell her how freaking angry I was after seeing her offering her body to someone else, how I wanted to own every part of her.
"Of course it is" she replied sarcastically and looked out her window.
"He was taking advantage of you, you were drunk and wasted" I countered.
"Oh really? Taking advantage? As if you didn't take advantage of the situation 'superman'" she scoffed. Well this was a terrible idea."Any exchange coming along your side?" I asked changing the topic.
"You seriously dragged me along to your business so that I can drag you along to mine?" She asked in disbelief. My anger was rising. Why was she so difficult?
"Well yes, it is why we got married in the first place isn't it? To mingle our businesses" I regretted those words escaping my mouth, because even though it was true, I was starting to fall for her. Hurt was written all over her face. She concealed it perfectly and preserved her words. We halted at the front of the house and she got out composed.
"Wait, I didn't mean it like that" I said as I got out of the car also. She halted and turned around, the glare in her eyes dangerous."You are right, this whole institution is based on business, nothing personal. I just wonder what will become of it once you get what you want" she said her glare burning every inch of me. I wanted to tell her that I had started developing feelings for her. That I liked her. That the thought of her with another man just drained every last bit of sanity within me.
"What do you mean by 'what I want'? I thought you also got into this because,,"
"Because my father owed your father. I would never try to take your legacy away from you Sean, I am nothing like you"
If only she knew. If only she knew that I was doing this for Marteaz. But I would not cave in to her words.
"We will cross that bridge when we get there then, no need to get angry" I said.
"I am not angry, just disappointed at the turn of events" she said with a straight face and went into the house.***
"So she took you to all the ranches?" Ramirez asked as he took his seat opposite me in my office.
"Every last one" I replied. Since our 'discussion' that night of the exchange, Violet had taken me to every ranch and showed me the basics of weapon dealing. Though I hadn't been to an actual exchange yet, she had offered a proper orientation.
"What push did you give to make her do that?" He was simply mocking me.
"I don't know, she says that I am part of her business now. There is something off about it though, it's like she is just handing it on a silver platter" I said.
"Well, it's what you wanted, right?" He asked confused.
"I know, it's just unlike her to open up about even the slightest things, now I know all her trade secrets" I reasoned.
"Maybe you are just unveiling a new side of her everyday" he said smirking.
"I'm not complaining but it seems too good to be true. Maybe you should talk to her and ask her why the sudden generosity" I said jokingly.
"She doesn't tell you, her husband, a person she sleeps on the same bed with and you expect her to tell me? Weapons are not for you, they are messing up your brain"
"So you noticed" I replied.
"Have you told Marteaz any of this?" He asked suddenly serious.
"Not yet, but I will, when the time is right" I answered. Truth is, ever since Violet brought up the issue of what would happen after I got my place in the business, I wanted to delay it as much as possible.*Things are heating up for them, but why is Violet suddenly generous?
