THE SUN'S FIRST RAYS PEAKED OVER THE HORIZON, painting the sky a canvas of pinks and oranges. A gentle breeze carries with it the scent of fresh dew on blades of grass and the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers. In the distance, birds begin their morning song, greeting the new day with their melodic voices.

[Name] slowly opens their eyes as the first beams of sunlight peek through the curtains of their bedroom. Rubbing the sleep from their eyes, they took a moment to let their senses adjust to the new day. The room is filled with a comfortable silence, interrupted only by the occasional sound of a bird singing outside the window. [Name] stretches out their limbs, feeling the pull of the crisp and cool sheets against their skin.

[Name] slowly sits up in bed, shivering slightly as their feet hit the cold hardwood floor. Yawning, they reach for their slippers and slip them over their feet, relishing the warmth and comfort they provide. Rising to their feet, [Name] stretches again, feeling the morning stiffness ease from their body as they make their way towards the door. As they step out into the hallway, they take a deep breath, inhaling the scent of freshly brewed coffee that wafts up from the kitchen down below.

[Name] descends the staircase and enters the kitchen, their mother already busy at the stove, flipping pancakes with practiced ease. Her eyes light up as she notices [Name] and she gives them a warm smile.

"Morning, sleepyhead," she teases, her voice full of affection. "I made your favorite pancakes."

[Name] takes a seat at the table and watches as their mother places a plate laden with golden pancakes in front of them. The smell of warm syrup and melted butter makes their mouth water. [Name] looks up, meeting their mother's gaze, and can't help but return her smile.

"Thanks, mom," they say, their voice still thick with sleep.

Their mother settles down in the chair across from them, a steaming cup of coffee cradled in her hands.

"You're welcome, sweetheart," she replies, her tone soft and maternal.

[Name] cuts into their pancakes, the butter and syrup mixing together to create a delicious flavor that they savor with each bite. Their mother watches them with a fond smile, their eyes crinkling at the edges with maternal affection.

As they eat, [Name] notices how comfortable they feel in this moment. The kitchen feels like a place of safety and warmth, and their mother's presence is like a warm embrace. The silence between them is companionable rather than awkward, and [Name] finds themselves relaxing further into their seat.

[Name]'s mother looks up from her coffee, her eyes glinting with curiosity.

"You know, [Name]," she begins, "you haven't mentioned anything about that friend of yours, Scaramouche, in a while. What's he up to these days?"

[Name] looks up from their pancakes, a small smile tugging at the corners of their mouth.

"Scaramouche? He's still his usual self, I suppose" they reply with a chuckle. "Stubborn and sarcastic as ever."

[Name] paused mid-bite, a flicker of realization crossing their face. "Actually," they say slowly, "now that you mention it, I haven't spoken to Scaramouche in a while. I wonder what he's up to..."

[Name] sighs, setting aside their half-eaten pancakes. "I guess I should get going to school," they say, standing up from the table. "Better not be late."

They grab their backpack from beside the door and sling it over their shoulder, pausing only to give their mother a quick wave goodbye before heading outside into the morning sunlight.

[Name] walks quickly down the sidewalk, dodging other students who are also heading to school. They spot the familiar yellow school bus pulling up to the stop just down the street, and quicken their pace to catch it.

They climb on and find an empty seat near the back, settling down as the bus pulls away from the curb and begins its journey towards school. As the bus bumps along the familiar route, [Name] looks out the window, watching the scenery outside flash past.

[Name] lets out a sigh, their thoughts dwelling on the fact that their mother had insisted on enrolling them in summer school. It was an unexpected and unwelcome chore that had come completely out of the blue.

They frown, leaning their forehead against the cool glass of the bus window and staring mindlessly out at the passing scenery. Summer school had never been something they'd looked forward to, and the thought of spending their precious summer months cooped up in a classroom was a painful one.

[Name] turns their thoughts towards Scaramouche again, wondering when they're next going to have a chance to get together. Summer school would no doubt keep them pretty busy, leaving little time for leisure.

They let out another sigh, their frown deepening. "I hope I get to see Scaramouche again soon," they thought, watching the bus approach the school. "But I guess only time will tell."
