ONE DAY, Scaramouche and his friend were walking home after school when they noticed a cat stuck in a tree. The little creature was mewing pitifully, its fur fluffed up in distress. [Name] looked concerned and immediately wanted to help.
"Poor kitty," they said, looking up at the tree. "We have to get her down from there."
Scaramouche followed their gaze to the tree and nodded in agreement. "How are we supposed to do that, though? It's a pretty tall tree."
[Name] looked around, a determined look on their face. "We need something to stand on. There's a tree stump over there we can use," they said, pointing to a nearby tree stump.
The two of them quickly dragged the tree stump over to the base of the tree. Scaramouche was the taller of the two, so he climbed up onto the stump first, careful not to let it shift under his weight. Once he was steady, he reached down to help [Name] up.
[Name] grabbed his hand and hoisted themselves up onto the stump, wobbling slightly before regaining their balance. The two of them looked up at the cat, which was now looking down at them with big, pitiful eyes.
"Okay, I'll climb up first and try to get her" Scaramouche said, assessing the tree. "Then I'll hand her down to you."
[Name] nodded, their eyes fixed on the cat. "Be careful. Those branches look pretty precarious."
Scaramouche began to climb, his hands and feet finding purchase on the rough bark of the tree. He moved slowly, testing each branch before putting his full weight on it. The cat mewed pitifully as he drew closer, clearly scared and stressed.
After a few minutes, Scaramouche managed to reached the cat, its fur bristling as he reached out to grab it. The cat hissed and batted at his hand with its claws, but Scaramouche managed to wrap his arms around it and hold on tight.
"I got her!" he called down to [Name], his voice a little strained. The cat was squirming in his arms, clearly displeased with the situation. Scaramouche began to make his way down the tree, his grip on the cat secure.
[Name] was waiting at the base of the tree, their arms held up in preparation to catch the cat. Scaramouche was slowly making his way down, careful not to drop the squirming animal. He was almost at the bottom when he slipped on a loose branch, losing his footing and careening straight into [Name].
Both of them fell to the ground, Scaramouche landing on top of [Name] with the cat squirming and hissing between them. They lay there for a moment, panting and groaning, before Scaramouche raised his head to look at them.
[Name] looked up at him, their eyes wide with surprise. "Are you okay?" They asked, wincing a little from the fall.
Scaramouche rolled off from them, sitting up and checking himself for injuries. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said, sounding a little breathless. "You?"
[Name] sat up as well, wincing a little as they rubbed their elbow. "Yeah, I'm okay," they said, their gaze falling on the cat, which was now staring at them balefully. "But what about the cat?"
The two of them looked at the cat, which was still squirming and hissing in Scaramouche's lap. Scaramouche frowned at the feline, clearly not happy with its behavior. "Little bugger bit me" he said, showing off a couple of scratches on his hand.
"Looks like she's not happy with us" [Name] said, looking amused by the cat's feisty attitude. "Can't say I blame her, though. It must have been pretty scary to be stuck up there all by herself."
Scaramouche nodded in agreement, gently stroking the cat's fur in an attempt to calm it down. "Yeah, I didn't exactly handle her with care either," he said, wincing as the cat scratched him again. "She's got a mean set of claws on her." [Name] chuckled at the sight of Scaramouche struggling with the feisty feline. "Looks like you've met your match," they teased. "I don't think that cat is too fond of you."
Scaramouche huffed in mock offense. "Hey, I'm just trying to help. It's not my fault she's being so difficult," he said, giving the cat a stern look. "You could at least show a little gratitude."
[Name] laughed, clearly enjoying the sight of Scaramouche being humbled by a small, feisty cat. "I think she's just expressing her independence. They say cats are free spirits, after all" they said, still unable to suppress a grin.
Scaramouche rolled his eyes, giving the cat another stern look. "Well, I don't think this little lady is quite ready to be set free just yet. She still needs to learn a few manners first."
[Name] chuckled again, clearly enjoying Scaramouche's struggle with the feisty cat. "Maybe she's just testing you. Cats are known for their sense of power, you know. She's probably seeing if you're worthy of being her human" they teased.
Scaramouche huffed and continued to gentle stroke the cat's fur, trying his best to keep his expression stern. "Well, I hope she's not expecting too much from me," he said, his voice a little strained as the cat scratched him again.
[Name] chuckled once again, clearly amused by the situation. "Looks like you've got your work cut out for you, Scaramouche. Good luck taming that feisty feline."
