THE FIRST SIGNS OF WINTER ALWAYS CAME SUDDENLY, as if the world itself took a deep breath and exhaled a sigh of cold air. It started with a chill in the air that seemed to sink deep into your bones, an ever-present reminder that the days were growing shorter and the nights longer. The leaves, once vibrant and full, began to turn colors of gold and crimson, a final blaze of color before they fell to the ground, leaving the trees barren and still. The air was alive with a sense of anticipation, like a held breath in the moments before snowfall.

Scaramouche stood outside the bedroom door of his childhood friend, his heart pounding in his chest. He knocked gently, the sound echoing in the silence of the night. For a moment, there was no response, and he wondered if they are even home. Then, he heard the soft sound of footsteps on the other side of the door, and the door swung open.

"Scaramouche?" a familiar voice said, surprise coloring their tone.

His friend was standing there, dressed in a soft cotton nightgown, their hair loose and tousled from sleep. Their eyes widened as they saw him standing there, a smile slowly growing on their face. "What are you doing here?" They asked, their tone both curious and amused.

"I just... wanted to see you." Scaramouche said, feeling a little foolish for showing up so unannounced. He shuffled his feet awkwardly, not quite meeting their gaze.

They raised an eyebrow at his response, their smile growing playful. "At this hour? Did you just happen to be in the neighborhood?" They teased, leaning against the doorframe.

Scaramouche felt his face heat up, realizing how ridiculous he must have looked. "No, I... well, I just couldn't sleep," he admitted sheepishly. "And I... I missed you."

Their teasing expression softened at his words, and they stepped forward to brush a lock of hair out of his face. "Well, come on in, then." They said, stepping back to let him into the room.

Scaramouche stepped inside, feeling a rush of warmth and familiarity as he entered the room. The memories he had of spending time here as a child came flooding back, and he suddenly felt a little embarrassed at the impulsive decision to come here so late. They just turned 12 and 13 this year, on their way to their teenager years

As Scaramouche stood in the room, his eyes took in the familiar surroundings. The walls were still painted the same soft [color] they had been when they were younger, and the bed was unmade, the sheets tangled and messy. Toys and books were scattered around the room, a testament to their childhood.

His friend closed the door quietly behind him, turning to face him with a small smile. "You always did have a habit of showing up unannounced," they said, moving to sit on the edge of the bed.

Scaramouche followed them over and sat down beside them, suddenly feeling a sense of nostalgia wash over him. "I know, I know," he said, running a hand through his hair in a sheepish gesture. "I just... I couldn't sleep, and... well, here I am."

They chuckled softly, leaning their head against his shoulder. "You always were a restless one," they said, their voice gently teasing. "You never could stay in one place for very long."

Scaramouche felt his heart skip a beat at her touch. Despite the years that had passed, the simple act of having them close still caused his heart to race. "I guess some things never change," he admitted, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

They hummed softly in agreement, their eyes drifting closed. They sat like that for a long moment, just enjoying each other's presence. Scaramouche could feel the warmth of their body against his, and he couldn't help but savor the moment.

Finally, [Name] spoke again, their voice soft in the stillness of the night. "Why couldn't you sleep, anyway?" They asked, their eyes opening to meet his gaze. "You usually sleep like a log."

Scaramouche laughed, the sound coming out as a soft huff. "Yeah, I remember. We used to make up all sorts of stories just to keep ourselves entertained."

"And we'd fall asleep in the same bed," they added, her tone casual. "You'd always end up falling asleep first, and I'd have to wake you up so you could go home before anyone noticed you were gone."

Scaramouche felt his face heat up at the memory, embarrassed at being reminded of his past impulsivity. "Yeah, I was pretty careless back then," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "My parents were going to kill me if they ever found out I was sneaking out of the house every night."

They smirked at his reaction, clearly enjoying his embarrassment. "You were a menace," they said, grinning. "But I secretly liked these little secret meetings. It made me feel like we were a team, always keeping each other's secrets."
