You've always saw them.
The monsters.
Mother and father told you it was just your imagination.
But it felt so real.
Everywhere you looked, there were creatures lurking in the darkness, some attached to other people who seemed oblivious to this fact.
You had gotten used to them, but avoided them at all costs. Although, it was difficult when they resided in your own home.
You grew up impoverished. Your parents did their best to keep you and your siblings happy.
But it was hard. You usually didn't know when you'd eat next.
Your father spent his time picking up jobs here and there, but could never seem to keep one, and your mother was too sick to work. But she cooked measly meals when there were ingredients at her disposal.
For awhile, things got pretty bad. It was impossible to take care of five children.
Your brother had fallen ill, and they lacked the necessary funds to bring him to the hospital.
So, your father sent you away.
You were hogtied and thrown in the back of your family's car. The drive was long and excruciatingly hot from the summer heat.
You were confused, broken. Your mother cried the entire car ride and your father kept an unfamiliar look on his face. But you could sense remorse.
He didn't want to take you away from the family and auction you off to the highest bidder.
But he had no choice. At least, that's what he told himself.
You stood in a cage, a dark shadow cascading over your face as your father stood in front of it, asking passersby's if they were interested in a 8 year old girl.
It was almost like he didn't care who bought you, as long as he got enough money out of it to cure his son. To pass down the family name.
It was in that moment you realized how disposable people were. Even people's own children if it meant getting something they wanted out of it.
Clearly, your fathers son was more important than his eldest daughter.
People crowded around the prison cell you were kept in, wrists tied behind your back as you stood next to other children in the same situation as you were in.
The monsters were feasting on the children, leeching to their sides, gurgling and screaming.
They were everywhere.
