Blake

Blake tried her best not to appear awkward as she sat across from Marie at the tiny table at one the coffee shops in the Prudential Center, sipping her hot cocoa. She felt awkward as hell, but she didn't let that show. Not when Marie was sitting across from her, looking like she was doing her best to appear the same. Blake could tell she was nervous, though. That's what she thought it was, at least.

Since Liam was Marie's ex, and Blake was trying to find ways to sneak around Marie and be with Liam pretty much every chance she got, it was easy for Blake to forget the balance between her and her roommate.

Marie had fucked things up between her and Liam, and hadn't listened to Blake when she'd told Marie to be honest with him. She'd also been a bit of a dick about things to Blake after they'd slept together and before Liam had broken up with her. So, as far as Marie knew, she was the one who had to put on a good show for Blake.

That should have made Blake feel a little smug, but instead it just made her feel as nervous as Marie probably felt.

She would rather be in her room doing some work, but Blake knew it was better to try and get on Marie's good side.

Plus, I promised Liam.

After she'd made the mistake of mentioning it to him in the first place.

"How was break?" Blake asked after taking another sip of her cocoa. It was almost two weeks since they'd been back, but, "I know we never really got to talk about it with how fast the semester's been going."

Marie smiled over her mug of tea, and Blake felt some of her nerves melt away.

"It was good. I liked seeing Em and my family. And it was nice having a break from classes for a while, but..."

Blake arched an eyebrow and tried her best to shoot Marie a sympathetic smile as she trailed off, "You missed Lexi?"

Marie smiled, nodding, "Especially when we'd really only been together for about a month before leaving. I knew we were good, but there was a little part of me that was a little worried that being apart for so long so soon would change things, you know?"

Before Blake could answer, Marie shook her head and scrubbed a hand over her face, "Sorry, that sounds stupid."

As Marie took a sip of her coffee, Blake nearly said she understood the feeling, but realized that might invite some unwanted questions.

"That's not stupid. You have doubts in any relationship. If you didn't have one in such a new relationship, I'd say Lexi might be a little scared."

Blake said the last part with a smile, and Marie laughed, blushing.

"Oh, trust me--I already worry way too much about coming off too clingy."

You didn't seem that way with Liam.

Blake blinked at the thought, keeping the frown from her face as she tried to process why that had popped into her head.

You are the one with Liam now. Why do you care about anything that happened between them?

Still, Blake decided it would probably be for the best to stray away from that topic for the time being.

"Did you channel all that into working out over break? You look good!"

Marie's face brightened, and Blake knew she was on the right track.

"Thanks for noticing. Yeah, I...I was having trouble keeping up in bed," Marie paused, taking a big sip of her cocoa, face bright red, and Blake found herself grinning, "I wanted to fix that, but I also just wanted to take better care of myself."
