Fumes wafted up from the pans in the kitchen. I was cooking steaks for dinner, making a few extra for if Nick came home and was hungry. They sizzled in the pan loudly, causing my stomach to growl in return. I looked down and patted it promisingly, it would be getting it's fair share soon.

Nick had left about an hour ago. He had a late shift at work after staying home all day today. He would be back in another hour or so, his shift being short.

The sky was growing dark outside, the vast expanse a deep purple. The trees swayed in the wind beautifully. This would be an amazing picture. I was tempted to go outside and sketch it, but I decided not to. It was getting darker by the second.

For the time that Nick had come into my life, I had forgotten about my artistic abilities. I hadn't drawn or painted a single sketch in the time I had known him. I mentally noted to do something about it, to find a project to keep busy on.

I was brainstorming ideas when I was tackled over. I fell against the wall as a body pressed itself onto me. I squirmed I fright until I heard a familiar laugh as the attacker wrapped their arms around me in a giant bear hug.

"KATIE!!!!" Marissa exclaimed in excitement as she squeezed my internal organs. I completely forgot she was coming home tonight. I'm a terrible friend.

"Marissa... Let go." I wheezed as the air escaped my lungs. I felt her grip loosen around me. I greedily gasped in air, my chest rising and falling heavily. Marissa looked at me with happiness in her eyes, a smile playing on her lips.

"Oh Katie, how I've missed you" she murmured softly, giggling lightly. I smiled as I hugged her back, wrapping my arms around her like a treehugger to a tree.

"How was Switzerland?!" I asked vibrantly as I let her go. My eyes widened as she told me all the stories and adventures she had gone through.

"... And then after skiing, we went back to the lodge and guess what. CHRIS PROPOSED!" She screeched excitedly. I basically fell over from the sound wave.

"NO. FRIKKEN. WAY!!!! What did you say?." I asked stupidly, knowing well what the answer would be. Marissa was deeply in love with Chris.

"Hell yes!!"My mind whirled, my best friend was engaged!! I internally danced a happy dance, freaking like a teenage girl.

"Oh my GOD. I'm so happy for you!!! We have to start planning and finding your dress and finding the food as finding decorations and everything!" I wave my hands about, a habit I tend to do when I'm excited.

"Definitely! And I was wondering... If maybe... Just maybe... You would wanna be the Maid of Honour?" She mumbled quietly. My mouth formed the perfect O shape.

"Oh hell no. Who do you think I am, a maid? Jesus, leave me alone!" I scoffed playfully. "Of course Marissa. I would be lad to be your Maid of Honour." Her eyes lit up at my acception. We both smiled widely as I took the steaks off the pan. I gave the extra to Marissa and we gobbled them down. They were surprisingly good for steaks on a stove.

We chatted about her wedding plans and discussed locations. Marissa wanted a pretty, elegant wedding and I suggested she should host it in the meadow behind our cottage. It would save on cost and would be very pretty and unique.

After we cleaned up our dishes, we headed to unpacking Marissa's luggage. As we were going through one of her giant three suitcases, she pulled out a little box from the side pocket.

"Close your eyes." Marissa stated mischievously.

"Why? You trying to kill me?" I glared playfully, narrowing my eyes and pouting like a child. She laughed at my expression.

"No, silly! I got you a gift! No close your freaking eyes before I do it myself." She threatened, trying to look menacing but failing miserably. I giggled at her effort and closed my eyes. She instructed me to hold out my hands as she placed the tiny box in them.

"Alright, you can open them now!" She declared, the smile on he face evident in her tone of voice. I slowly opened my eyes to see the most beautiful earrings I had ever seen.

They were silver in colour. They bore little chains that could connect to multiple holes in your ear, which I had. They donned little jewels at the bottom and were shaped to look like an elegant star.

"Oh my goodness. I love them." I breathed. I swear, if you could marry jewellery, I would be planning a wedding with Marissa.

"I knew it. I saw them when I was touring a city and they reminded me of you. I'm so happy you like them!" My best friend smiled. I leaned in and have her a huge hug. She knew me so well.

We trotted to the washroom to put them on. We put them into place and admired them in the mirror. They looked absolutely stunning on me. I let a few tears slip out of my eyes as I hugged Marissa again.

"You look amazing Katie. Like always" she murmured softly in my ear. A giant grin played its way onto my face as I hugged her tighter.

"Thank you babe. It's all because of you." I responded.

Suddenly, Marissa pulled me back. She eyed my neck cautiously. My eyes widened as I saw concern plastered on her face.

"What? What's wrong?" I looked into her eyes, not sure what was happening. In response, she dragged me to the mirror and flipped my hair off my neck, exposing my fresh hickey. It was a dark red, standing out on my paleish skin. It was a miracle she hadn't seen it before.

"Oh..." I breathed. I felt the blood rush up to my cheeks as she looked me in the eyes. She was about to say something as someone knocked at the door.

No. He couldn't show up right now. Not at this timing.

Marissa walked around me and jogged to the door. I peeked my head around the corner and was about to call her back as she reached the door. She swung it open with ease and came face to face with, you guessed it, Nicholas Hoult.
