❝ He's not supposed to be dead. It should've worked. ❞

The castle was unnaturally silent. There were no flashes of light now, no bangs or screams or shouts. The flagstones of the deserted entrance hall were stained with blood. Emeralds were still scattered all over the floor, along with pieces of marble and splintered wood.

"Where is everyone?" whispered Hermione.

Ron led the way to the Great Hall. Harry stopped in the doorway.

The House tables were gone and the room was crowded. The survivors stood in groups, their arms around each other's necks. The injured were being treated upon the raised platform by Madam Pomfrey and a group of helpers. Rebekah was nowhere to be seen with the Healers.

The dead lay in a row in the middle of the Hall. Y/N's eyes fell upon a familiar group of people, surrounding a body. Zach was kneeling on the ground, with Ernie's hand around his shoulders. Anna was lying across the body's chest, shaking, Charlotte stroking her hair while tears cascaded down her cheeks.

With a painful jolt in her chest, Y/N realised that Alex was dead.

Y/N moved away from Harry, Ron, and Hermione, starting to walk up to her Hufflepuff friends when something else caught her eye. She saw her mother, right next to the mourning group. She was kneeling over another body, with Sirius right next to her. Y/N moved closer and for a moment, she wished she could rip out her heart.

She saw her uncle Remus and aunt Tonks, pale and peaceful-looking, apparently asleep beneath the dark, enchanted ceiling.

Rebekah was clutching Remus' collar and shaking it.

"Wake up, Remus," she cried, too exhausted to do much. "Remus, you have a son. Wake up! You have a baby, Remus, you have a son- you have a son, Remus, you can't do this to him-"

She was repeating the same words again and again, tears falling helplessly down her face, while Sirius rubbed her shoulders, trying to comfort her.

Y/N knelt beside her mother, and at the sight of her daughter, Rebekah seemed to snap out of it. Without a word, she hugged Y/N and continued to cry. Out of grief for her brother or out of joy for her daughter's safety, Y/N didn't know.

"How?" she asked.

"Dolohov," answered Sirius.

A moment of silence passed.

"Where's Harry?" said Sirius.

"Huh? He's right there-"

Y/N turned toward the doorway and stopped her sentence midway. Harry was nowhere near the entrance. Neither were Ron and Hermione. Standing up, Y/N searched the Hall for her best friends. She found Ron and Hermione with the Weasleys a few feet away.
