Lucy found herself quite unable to fathom the sudden and pronounced interest Lucien had recently begun to display toward her. Nevertheless, she received this newfound attention with a gracious and welcoming demeanor, for she harbored intentions of utilizing his favor to acquire valuable information pertaining to her own discreet inquiries.

On the eve of yet another illustrious social engagement, Lucy busied herself with the preparations befitting such an occasion. She summoned her loyal maid, Adeline, to assist in the selection of her attire. With meticulous care, they chose an exquisite gown of the deepest emerald green, its lacey fabric shimmering subtly under the soft glow of candlelight. The gown, designed with a modest neckline and delicately puffed sleeves, was adorned with intricate lace patterns and tiny seed pearls, adding to its air of refined sophistication.

To complement her dress, Lucy selected a necklace of equally rich emeralds, each gem catching the light and reflecting it with a mesmerizing brilliance. Her hair, a cascade of silken tresses, was skillfully arranged by Adeline into a complex updo, interwoven with small, glittering ornaments that sparkled like stars. To complete her ensemble, she chose a pair of elaborate earrings, each one featuring an emerald teardrop that extended gracefully to the nape of her neck.

Having made a striking impression at the Heathford ball, Lucy was acutely aware of the importance of maintaining an image of unassailable elegance and grace. As she gazed at her reflection, she resolved that tonight, as before, she would captivate the assembly with her poise and charm, ensuring that all eyes would remain firmly fixed upon her.

She and Louise had pledged to seek each other out as soon as they arrived at the grand occasion. This meeting would serve as the perfect opportunity to plan their next move: selecting whom to engage in conversation and determining the nature of their dialogues. Lucy was acutely aware that she was expected to capture Lucien's attention, as he had recently shown a marked interest in her.

Upon arriving with her aunt and uncle, Lucy immediately set her plan into motion. The fiery-haired beauty quickly discerned that Louise had already arrived, signaling her presence with a subtle, yet knowing glance.

After courteously excusing herself from her relatives, Lucy made her way towards Louise.

"You look magnificent, Louise," she exclaimed with genuine admiration.

Indeed, Louise did look resplendent. This evening, she wore a cream-colored gown that, despite its simplicity, exuded a quiet, understated elegance. The dress, crafted from fine silk, featured delicate lace trim at the cuffs and neckline. The bodice was fitted perfectly, accentuating her graceful figure, while the skirt flowed effortlessly, a testament to impeccable tailoring. The lack of excessive embellishment only served to highlight the purity of the gown's design.

Louise's striking red hair had been meticulously curled and styled into a sleek, perfect updo, adorned with a few subtle jeweled pins that glimmered softly in the candlelight. This refined hairstyle framed her face exquisitely, enhancing her delicate features and giving her an air of innocent charm.

Yet, both women were fully aware that Louise's appearance of innocence was but a façade. Beneath her angelic exterior lay a shrewd and calculating mind, one that rivaled Lucy's own cunning. Louise, more than Lucy, harbored a complex web of secrets and strategies, ready to be deployed as the evening unfolded.

Louise's countenance brightened with delight. "Thank you, Lucy! But I am nothing compared to you! You look positively breathtaking."

"I have already surveyed the assemblage here. I think I might converse a little with your aunt to uncover something about Lady Arden. Then I shall speak with her husband—though he seems rather clueless."
