WAYS OF MAKING COMPARISONS
As you already know, there are different ways of comparing adjectives, adverbs and nouns.
Apart from these, there are also other ways of making comparisons:
· This table compares the percentage of [...] who/that [...].
· 4% of [...] in comparison with/ to 2% of [...].
· In comparison with/ to [...], [...] twice as much [...].
· 4 % of [...], compared with/ to 2% of [...].
· Compared with/to [...], [...] increased twice as much last year.
· Considering overall figures, the percentage of [...] who/that [...] was comparable to that of [...].
DESCRIBING CHANGE: Adjectives & Adverbs
In order to be more accurate, we should describe how significant a change is. We can modify nouns using adjectives (e.g. a steady increase) and we also can modify verbs using adverbs (e.g. increase steadily).
The following tables include adjectives and adverbs that describe the degree of change, depending on its significance:
SIGNIFICANT CHANGE
significant - significantly
considerable - considerably
dramatic - dramatically
sharp - sharply
steep - steeply
sudden - suddenly
MODERATE CHANGE
moderate - moderately
relative - relatively
steady - steadily
continuous - continuously
SLIGHT CHANGE
slight - slightly
slow - slowly
gradual - gradually
marginal - marginally
negligible - negligibly
