narrative
september 10th, 2022
As per her routine, Caitlin found herself in Carver, putting up shot after shot after shot. She once again found pleasure in how her feet moved against the hardwood, how her eyes rapidly scanned the court, making up game situations to replicate, and how nearly every shot she took found the bottom of the net.
"Oooh," Monika let out a small laugh as she appeared from the tunnel closest to where Caitlin had been shooting. "Somebody's feeling it today."
"Guess I am." She absentmindedly responded, retrieving the ball once more.
Monika met her in the middle, setting down her water bottle underneath the hoop. "I'll get your rebounds."
"Thanks, Mon." Caitlin retreated far behind the three point line, sinking a shot from nearly half court.
"Looks like somebody's finally out of their slump." Monika caught the rebound, passing the ball back out to Caitlin.
"What do you mean?" Another shot found its way from the net into Monika's hands.
"Well, I mean, everything that was happening with Ang." This time, Caitlin's shot was short, missing the hoop entirely.
"Ah." Monika simply exhaled, reading the sour expression on Caitlin's face. "Maybe not everything's good."
"We're fine, we're...we're friends." Caitlin placed extra emphasis on the last word, letting a false smile consume her face.
"Oh. But I thought-"
"I pussied out, Mon." Caitlin admitted, missing another shot off the rim. "If she doesn't feel the same way, I ruin my friendship with one of the best people I've ever met."
"And if she does?" Monika's question was only answered by Caitlin's silence. "Cait, you need to tell her how you feel because this is just holding you back."
Deep down Caitlin knew Monika was right. She had to figure things out and talk to Angelina. For real this time. No emotions held back.
