reader is a sleepwalker and loves dogs.
── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅ ──iwaizumi blinked awake, the moonlight filtering through the window casting an eerie glow in the bedroom. something felt off about the way he woke up, because he didn't have to get up for another few hours.
usually he stayed asleep the entire night.
with a small groan, he tried to shake it off. he shifted slightly, reaching out to pull his boyfriend of one year, y/n closer. they were having a sleepover, as silly as that may sound to anyone else. but they liked sleepovers, and that's all that mattered.
his hand fell on the empty mattress beside him. his eyes shot open as panic seized his chest. he sat up and scanned the room. y/n wasn't there.
"oh, damn it." he grumbled, throwing the covers off himself and stumbling out of bed.
he hurried around the house, dread building in his gut. the front door stood slightly ajar, a chilly breeze sneaking into the house. iwaizumi shivered, wondering how his father didn't feel anything since his room was the closest to the door.
"y/n?" he called out into the darkness, stepping forward a little.
no response. iwaizumi stepped onto the porch, eyes scanning the yard.
there were shadows from the trees and the streetlights, and in shadows of such, he spotted y/n standing alone a little bit from the front door holding something in his hand.
relief flooded through iwaizumi, exhaling deeply.
"hey, y/n." iwaizumi called out, approaching cautiously. "what are you doing?"
y/n turned slowly, his expression blank and eyes wide. in his hand was a leash, dangling loosely.
"taking the dog... for a walk." y/n murmured, his voice slurred with sleep. "he was cryin'. i love him..."
iwaizumi blinked at him, then looked at the leash that was attached to nothing.
he sighed and stepped closer, taking y/n's free hand gently and guiding him back towards the house.
"we don't have a dog."
y/n blinked slowly, confusion clouding his eyes. "whadda mean?" he echoed, his brow furrowing. "no dog?"
"no dog, love." iwaizumi confirmed gently, leading y/n back inside and closing the front door behind them. "i don't even know where you got that leash. and i'm... surprisingly fine with that."
he guided y/n back into his bedroom, where he settled him back into bed.
y/n curled up under the covers, still half-asleep. iwaizumi sat on the edge of the bed, running a hand through his hair as he tried to calm his racing thoughts.
"but i want a dog."
"maybe when we're older." iwaizumi replied softly.
"want one now."
"well, we don't live with each other, love. you're gonna have to ask your mom about that."
y/n mumbled something else, then drifted back into a deep sleep.

a few weeks later, y/n was trudging up the familiar path to his home, swinging his keys on his index finger as he hummed a small tune. he was expecting to come home to en empty house, his mom usually worked late nights so he would be alone. he didn't like that.
it was part of the reason why he liked spending so much time with iwaizumi at his place. he was able to keep track of his sleep walking episodes when no one else could. and plus, he got lonely.
but when he opened the door, to his surprise, there was iwaizumi, at the kitchen island with a mysterious box in his hands that had small holes punctured on the top.
y/n's brows furrowed in confusion. "hi." he greeted, dropping his school bag by the door and slipping off his shoes. "what are you doing here? you said you had practice and that's why we couldn't walk together."
he pouted. "if you didn't want to walk together you could've said so."
iwaizumi gave him a small smile and went over to him, holding the small box under his arm carefully. he leaned forward and gave him a small peck on the lips. "i always want to walk home with you, love. and i do have practice," he replied, his voice tinged with excitement. "but today, i had something else to take care of."
y/n's mood lifted slightly as he gave iwaizumi a giddy smile just from the small kiss. "like what?"
iwaizumi held the box out to y/n. "here."
curiosity peeked, y/n slowly grabbed ahold of the box and held it securely as he took off the top. his eyes widened in surprise when he saw a tiny, fluffy puppy nestled inside, its tail wagging slowly as it gazed up at him with wide and dark eyes. "oh my, god," y/n gasped, his heart melting at the sight of the adorable creature.
iwaizumi chuckled at his reaction, carefully lifting the puppy out of the box and cradling it in his arms. "i talked to your mom," he explained, his tone gentle yet filled with excitement. "she said it's okay for you to have a dog. she knows how much you've been wanting one."
y/n's heart swelled with a mix of emotions. joy, gratitude, and a touch of disbelief. he got a little teary eyed as he reached out and looked at the puppy, cooing at how cute... he was. it was a boy.
he looked at iwaizumi. "he's really mine?"
"yeah," iwaizumi confirmed, a soft smile playing on his lips. "well, he could be ours. co-parenting and... all that stuff."
unable to contain his happiness, y/n held the puppy securely in his arms as he surged forward, smashing his lips against iwaizumi's, smiling into it. iwaizumi laughed, the sound making y/n start to giggle too. y/n pulled away, wiping his eyes as he cradled their new dog.
"thank you," he whispered, feeling iwaizumi's arms wrap around his waist. "best surprise ever."
"i also figured you needed something to keep you company when i'm at practice and you're here alone. i know how you hate it."
y/n laughed, burying his face in iwaizumi's shoulder. "i love you." he said affectionately.
iwaizumi started to scratch behind the dog's ears, making his tail start to wag rapidly. he pressed his lips gently against the soft fur, then to y/n's hair. "i love you, too."
he better, because y/n was already starting to think of all of the brothers and sisters their new puppy would eventually have.
