y/n was probably the only person that was able to deal with kyotani on a daily basis. iwaizumi would do as much as he was able to do, but it always got to a point where kyotani would ignore him. but when y/n said something to him or asked him of something, the whole 'mad dog' façade would break and he would just become kentaro. it was a little weird, considering they had only met when y/n started high school. but maybe it was because y/n never saw him as mad dog, he just saw his friend which he admired for his passion and drive, even if his temper sometimes got the best of him.

they'd worked together countless times, and while kyotani's outbursts were intimidating to some, y/n had always managed to keep his cool and work alongside him. he had some of the same authority that iwaizumi had over kyotani, but he never used it to his advantage, or at all.

today, however, kyotani seemed more on edge than usual.

practice was grueling, and the team was pushing their limits in preparation for an upcoming match. kyotani's frustration was palpable as he barked orders and criticized mistakes, his temper flaring with each perceived failure.

oikawa was on the other side of the court and he served the ball, serving it with all he had. y/n moved quickly across the court, the ball being on his side. he dived and tried to push it back into play but he miscalculated and ended up going a little more to the right than he would've preferred.

he sighed and sat up, chucking to himself. "wow, that one was bad. sorry-"

"damn it, y/n!" kyotani shouted, having y/n stop talking and look at him from the floor. he was glaring daggers at him, and it made y/n's blood run cold.

"do you know how to do anything right? you've made that same mistake three times! we've been over this and we've showed you what to do better, and yet, here we are, facing the same issue. stop trying to act so nonchalant about it, that's why you keep messing up. what if you do that in a real game? we'll loose and it's gonna be your fault."

the comments made y/n freeze where he sat and his heart rate pick up. the rest of the team went silent, the air thick with tension.

iwaizumi looked at kyotani like he was out of his mind, which he was, but the comment wasn't even directed toward him, and it still hurt him. he wanted nothing more than to go under the net and teach kyotani a lesson that he wouldn't forget, but when he saw y/n, he knew he shouldn't cause more a scene than there already was.

y/n felt a lump form in his throat, but he swallowed it down, refusing to let his emotions show. "sorry," he mumbled, his voice barely audible. he got up and picked up the ball and tossed it back to the server, avoiding eye contact with kyotani.

practice continued, but y/n's heart wasn't in it. he moved through the drills mechanically, his usual energy drained away.

kyotani didn't notice the shift at first. he was too wrapped up in his own frustration, too focused on winning to see the hurt in y/n's eyes. it wasn't until the end of practice, when y/n silently packed up his things and left without a word along with his brother, that kyotani began to sense that something was wrong.

in the locker room, he was the last one still there, tying his shoes back on his feet.

"so... what was that about?"

kyotani looked up to his left, seeing oikawa standing there dressed out while grasping onto his bag strap. he bristled at the sight of him, his irritation already having been high, but it just got worse seeing the dumb smirk on the brunets face.
