The night came with a wretched air. The rancid smell of rotting flesh that surrounded Huli village made the plants wither instantly.
Amara stared at a far distance, watching the Maranhigs slowly make their way inside the village. Their steps were slow and heavy, like a mournful funeral procession, their groans sounding like it came from hell itself.
She took a deep breath and brought out her book. This is not scary at all, she can do it, just like how she was able to do a forbidden spell without fail when she saved Manong.
She made a careful reading on a purifying spell from the Book of Lunas. She made sure to keep in mind the steps of the ritual to be done, as well as every syllable of the spell.
She tried to recite a few syllables, but Raha Sitan distracted her by coughing endlessly. He was so loud that she had to stop practicing.
She squinted and accusingly pointed her finger at him. "You're doing it on purpose, aren't you?"
Raha Sitan shook his head with a blank innocent face. "My dear wife, how can you be so cruel to think that way? I am really feeling sick." He coughed again, and based from the sound of it, he was clearly faking it.
Amara knows why he's being this way. Raha Sitan didn't want her to cast a spell, but she threatened not sleep with him later.
Whether it was literal or figurative, he didn't like the thought of not embracing his wife at night, so he was forced to give in to her request.
As a mortal herself, it's actually preposterous of her to do that to an immortal. How would other people react from this if they knew what she had done?
But if she won't do that, he will just easily blow their cover. Just look at how he almost told Ramon his real identity.
She sighed, hid her book, and embraced Raha Sitan. "Husband, I know that you are upset at me right now. However, I don't want Apo Bagani to assume that you killed everyone here. It will give us a lot of trouble."
If that happens, all tribes will be out for their throats. No one should know that the Apo Mumbaki and the princess of Hiraya tribe are out of the Panganib forest.
"I'm not upset with you, my dear wife," Raha Sitan admitted. "I'm just worried about the risks. I don't want you to get hurt. I'd rather be casted off as the most evil man in this world than to see you suffer."
Amara felt her heart skip when she heard his words. She's starting to feel guilty for threatening him that way. She smiled at him. "Thank you for being a loving husband to me."
"I will do anything to make you happy," Raha Sitan said, his arms surrounding her. "Just promise me that you will not get hurt."
"If I fail, I will let you burn down the whole village," she promised him.
Raha Sitan pulled out of their embrace, his eyes narrowing. "Why do you think someone as powerful as you would fail the ritual?"
She laughed at his joke, "Husband, you put me too high on the pedestal."
"Because you are my wife, I will boast about your greatness everywhere." He sounded sincere with his words, but she knows he's only making her feel better.
A mortal like her, with not much training, is powerful? If it's not a simple jest then what does he imply?
Before she could even give another remark about his joke, Ramon suddenly came up to them. On his arms he held Manong, who was slouching and having a blank face as though he is tired of everything. "Amara, why are the people leaving?"
Raha Sitan noticed Manong's expression and secretly gave him a mocking smile as though telling the child, "You deserve whatever hardships you're experiencing."
