The hero course curriculum was interesting to say the least. It was normal classes in the morning, with the training classes in the afternoon. Nico and Will needed help when it came to language classes, but they got by well enough with minimal assistance. Present mic taught English, and he was doing his best to make it interesting. He called on me when nobody responded to anything he was saying. "Di Angelo!" Nico and I both raised our heads.
"What?" We both responded.
"Oh, right, I forgot you two are twins. Evelina!" Nico went back to trying to decipher the board and trying to make out what was bring said. "Which sentience contains a mistake?"
"Fourth one."
"Correct! And how do you know that?"
"The adjective comes before the pronoun, since the adjective needs to be able to either ask the question or describe the object." I explained, bored. I was messing with my skull earrings as I said this, and Mic smiled.
"Correct again!" He continued with his lesson, and I zoned out. My leg bounced absentmindedly, and I closed my eyes, waiting for the bell to ring for lunch. So far, nobody's noticed or questioned us sacrificing some food under the table, so the mist must be covering that. Will and Nico sat away from people, and while I love to stick with my twin, I don't love seeing them all lovey-dovey all the time. I already see enough at home. So, I decided today I would sit with midoriya and his friends.
"Evelina, you're sitting with us today?" I nod, setting my tray down. "Not that I mind, but how come?"
"Will and Nico are being overly affectionate today. Nico had a nightmare last night, so he's clinging to his human nightlight." I chuckle and take a bit of my food. It's good, but it's not my kind of food. I'll have to remember to bring some of my favorites to school.
"Why do you call him that?" Uraraka asked.
"Who, Will?" She nods. "Because of his quirk, he can glow. He has a lot of nicknames from Nico and I, my favorites being glowstick or nightlight, while Nico's is either Carebear or sunshine." I take another bite of my food. "It's equal parts adorable, and disgusting."
"But isn't it nice to see your brother happy like this?"
"It is. Until you live with it." I say.
"You three live together?" I nod.
"We're transfur students from the states. We don't live with out parents. Will's mom is a country singer, and his dad's been a little bit of everything, meanwhile, Nico and I don't have a mom anymore, and our dad's been busy running things."
"What, is your dad some sort of CEO?"
"More like an owner of a stock firm." That part wasn't a lie. With Hades being a god of riches, he gets bored and decides to sometimes contribute to the mortal world and support people. Why wouldn't he? We all die one day, so why push for it to happen sooner? He runs not only a kingdom of souls, but a worldwide stock cooperation.
"Oh? Which one?" I was dreading this.
"Underworld finances." I avert my gaze.
"What?!" They all had their jaws dropped.
"And this is why we don't talk about it." Izuku pulled up a photo on his phone. It was a photo of Dad in the summer with Persephone, the photo taken by paparazzi and posted online. They're walking a huge Great Dane, which is actually Cerberus.
"Hades Vrettos is your father?" I nod. "He's got so much influence in the world of heroes, often lending money to hero firms that are just starting up and doesn't charge a dime back!"
"I know." I say.
"I must say, it's quite impressive. But who is that woman?" Iida asks.
"Our stepmother, Persephone Vrettos. She may look young, but she's strong. Her quirk is plant growth, and she can manipulate them at her will."
"Wait, if your fathers last name if Vrettos, why don't you guys have that last name?" I roll my eyes.
"We're his bastard children. A product of his polyamorous relation with our mother, his wife and him. We have our mothers last name since they weren't married. Our stepmother didn't like us at first cause we reminded her of our mother."
"I take it your half-sister was the same?"
"Probably. I'd have to ask."
"What was your mother like?" Midoriya asked. I stilled for a moment. "You don't have to say anything if you don't want to, I'm just curious."
"Our mother was beautiful." I say, trying my best to remember her. Our memories have come back some, but there's still a lot of gaps. "She may have been quirkless, but her voice was the best thing I remember about her." I smiled a little, thinking of how she used to sing the three of us to sleep. "She would keep us safe, and taught the three of us to cook amazing meals from Italy."
"Three?"
"You, Nico and Hazel, right?" I shook my head no.
"We had one other sister. Bianca. But she went off one day, and we never saw her again." I felt tears well up in my eyes. "My cousin tried to save her, save her, but he wasn't fast enough." I sniffed a bit. "She died because of her love."
"Can't you just bring her back?" I shake my head.
"She became a ghost." Uraraka opens her mouth to speak, and I hold up my hand to stop her. "For a while, we could talk to her, but she didn't want to talk to us. She wanted us to move on without her. Ghosts have an option when they die. If they meet certain requirements, they can reincarnate. And well, Bianca met those requirements." Midoriya handed me a napkin and patted my shoulder. I blew my nose quickly before I continued. "To make sure we couldn't keep bringing her back, drowning in the past, she reincarnated. Once she did that, we had no way to track her down. No way to bring her back. And her body wasn't recoverable. All the bones and organs were crushed. She had no chance of surviving. At least she died quick and without pain." I sighed. "She died trying to get something for the two of us and was crushed by a drunk driver." I gave a half truth. "There was nothing we could have done."
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."
"Yeah. You shouldn't've." I said. Nobody argued as I said that.
The rest of lunch was quiet and depressing.
Nobody at our table bothered to ask anything else.
