Parenthood

[gallagher house]

[everyone is sitting by the kitchen table]

debbie: Where's Grammy? 

fiona: Frank took her to Sheila's late last night. She was having trouble breathing.

ian: The chemicals from the fire were aggravating her emphysema.

debbie: Will the chemicals give us emphysema?

ian: Probably, but we won't know for 50 years.

FIONA: [seeing carl come down the stairs] Carl, the team gives you one helmet and if you break it, we can't afford to replace it.

carl: Don't matter. Season's over. 

fiona: What?

carl: tell me about it..i was hoping being on a football team would impress liv

ian: yeah....i'm pretty sure it won't change her mind carl...[looking at fiona] Coach got arrested for exposing himself at the park. 

debbie: He was peeing being a shed. A couple of seven-year-old girls saw "it."

carl: I don't get it. Half the world has penises. Why do people get so upset about seeing them? 

ian: Context.

carl: What's that?

fiona: When, how, where and with who.

carl: Ian, you played-- you could coach...maybe our girl livvy could be the assistant coach

ian: Uh, can't. I got to work after school and so does livvy, bud. Sorry.

[ian gets up packing his stuff]

fiona: You going to school early? 

ian: Chemistry study group...[looking at the watch] and i was supposed to meet livvy 20 minutes ago..i gotta go...

[ian leaves]

[later]

[olivia and ian are at their spot on the dock]

olivia: i'm sure he won't say anything...besides...its not like anyone would believe him

ian: even so...i don't think mickey is convinced...

olivia: meaning:

ian: i think he might do something stupid

olivia: well he is a milkovich...its kinda in his dna

[the two laugh]

ian: yeah...but i don't want him to do anything...or...be put back in juvie again

olivia: look...i wouldn't stress about it ok...frank will be fine...and don't worry about mickey...it will all be fine

[ian then nods as olivia drinks her coffee]

[next day]

[olivia is sitting at her kitchen table eating some toast and ian barges in startling her]

olivia: uh...hi

ian: remember how you said everything will work out ...with frank...and mickey

olivia: yeah...

ian: well...its not...everything is fucked up

olivia: what happened

ian: well...mickey just admitted that he is going to kill frank...for what he saw..and [teary]

olivia: ian...

ian: mickey..said that...i'm just a warm mouth to him

olivia: i highly doubt he meant that....

ian: well it sounded like he did

olivia: well...maybe...he is just scared...i mean...of what people may think...especially his dad...

ian: we have nothing to be ashamed of....

olivia: of course you don't..maybe...for the time being ...you just...pause...on you and mickey right now...focus...on yourself....and if this thing with mickey...is meant to be...it will...be

[ian then nods and pulls olivia in a hug as he cries]

[later]

[gallagher house]

[ian and olivia head downstairs after hearing fiona and lip argue and stand on the stairs]

fiona: This isn't about me.

lip: So, what, you want me to bust my ass, get a diploma and a high-paying job, so I can buy you all houses and shit while you lay around doing fuck-all?

carl: I'm down for that.

lip: Why is that on me, huh? Because I've done all right on some tests?

(steve's wife whispers in Portuguese)

lip: No, I'll pull my weight, but I'm not going to be the fucking golden goose!

fiona: School or out. 

lip: What?

fiona: My job is to keep this house going. Busting my ass for you, working eight jobs, making meals, keeping everything straight. Your job is school! School or leave.

[lip then passes olivia and ian going to his room and ian and olivia go stand by the coach]

[later]

[ian and olivia are goofing off in the kitchen as lip has his bag in the living room]

fiona: What are you doing?

lip: Well, I'm not going back to school, so I guess it means I'm leaving.

[lip then leaves the house as everyone looks upset and unsure of what to do next]
