September 1997 - Hogwarts
When we finally arrived at Hogwarts, it wasn't quite as splendorous as the first time. The magic was there, but so were traces of Voldemort's influence. I didn't hear Hagrid screaming for the first years. I didn't see Hagrid at all. And many of the teachers were replaced by death eaters. So I was relieved to see a few familiar faces. After sitting through the sorting ceremony, we were all released to our dorms. I decided to exclusively stay in my own dorm. To avoid, well, people. Only the people I didn't like. So really, just Pansy. Jane barged in with some papers while I was unpacking.
"Ok, first of all," she said as she held up my book. "This is amazing."
"Really?" I asked. "You like it?"
"I love it," she said. "I mean it's just so cool. I was here when all of this happened and you tell the story like you know more than me."
"Well," I said. "Harry liked to tell these stories. And brag about himself. I've got a lot of them, actually."
"Well, if you write them, I'll read them," she said, handing me a paper. "Also I picked up our schedules. I already checked. We have all the same classes."
"Awesome," I said.
"But we don't start tomorrow."
"What?" I asked.
"Tomorrow, all the seventh years have a career workshop."
"What is that?"
"Probably exactly what it sounds like," she said. "I guess they want to make sure we have a plan after we leave here."
"Yeah, that actually sounds like a good idea," I said. "What are you thinking about?"
"I don't know," she said. "It's not that I can't think of something, it's that I have too many things I want to do. I like animals, I like art, and I think Aurology is cool. What about you?"
"I don't think I qualify for anything sufficient," I said. "I'm three years behind."
"Grace, you're the top of the class now that Hermione is gone," she said.
"Only because there are so many classes I haven't had to take. Of course, my grades are good. My classes are easy."
"They're easy because you're a genius," she said.
"I'm not a genius," I argued. "I can do the assignments and do well in the class but I can't see myself doing these things for the rest of my life. I really don't know what I'm going to do."
"Well, Draco is rich, so you're good," she laughed."Oh, I got my dad to grab these for you, by the way." She handed me some papers.
"What are these?" I asked.
"You're turning 18 soon," she said. "You said you wanted to change your last name. Those are the forms."
"Oh," I said, a smile growing on my face. "Well, actually, I'm gonna hold off on changing my name for a little bit."
"What? Why?" I couldn't contain myself.
"Promise you won't say anything?
"Yes," she said quickly. "Grace. Tell me right now." I held out my hand and cast revelio. I watched as my ring revealed its beauty. Jane's eyes widened and her jaw dropped.
"Shut up," she said quietly. I smiled. "Shut up! Grace!" We couldn't help it. The feminine urge to scream, hold hands, and jump up and down took over.
"Oh my god, you're getting married!"
"I'm getting married!"
"When?"
"We don't have a date yet," I said. "I think we're going to get through the school year before we start to really plan anything."
"Wow, I just, wow," she said. "That's amazing. I'm so excited for you. So you have nothing planned?"
"Well...I know who my husband is going to be. We've made it that far," I laughed. "And, well, if you're up for it-"
"Yes," she said, cutting me off. "I will be your maid of honor."
"How did you know I was going to ask you that?"
"Because if you didn't, we'd have problems," she said. "Oh, sit down. I have to tell you about the dumbest thing that Pansy said today."
"Oh my god, tell me."
I just have one thing to say: I love my best friend.
